| mylwra's Full Review: Sony BRAVIA KDL-52WL140 52 in. HDTV-Ready TV |
I purchased this television based on research I had done. My primary reasons for purchasing a new television were for space restraints and the soon-to-be digital change in February. We are on an antenna and we have already lost one channel due to the change and we did not want to have to deal with a conversion box and it's cables. We chose LCD over plasma because of heat issues (plasma appears to put off a lot of heat). We bought ours from a local wholesale club because of their excellent returns policy. This was the most important part of our decision. This television was actually our second choice due to the fact that our first choice was never in stock at the place where we purchased it. A small compromise in our eyes. The television is...large! It was quite an adjustment from our old Sony 27" picture tube television. After installing it with a wall mount and wall shelves for our components, it made for a tidy installation. Upon starting it up the first time, it started finding all of our new digital channels. The HD channels look great and many of the SD channels are excellent also. The picture is impressive with HD channels and BlueRays played through our PS3. We are very impressed with the picture quality. However, if the resolution is poor to begin with, it will be just as bad or worse because of the size of the screen regardless of what brand you purchase, so just be prepared. The sound is decent, but I confess, I am not a technophile, so I wouldn't count myself as a great judge in this. Hook-up is easy, menu simple to understand. Remote is no frills, no back light. A comparable television could be purchased for less elsewhere if you are not encumbered by the returns/warranty thing like I am. One thing that I do not like is the Bravia Internet Video Link that came with it. I knew that it would be limited before I got it, but, to me, it really isn't worth all the bother with the cables, etc., to hook it up. You are limited to whatever websites are predetermined, which are few. YouTube is one of the better known and Amazon video service is another. I have yet to try Amazon. If you really want web content on your television, better look into a home theatre pc. We routinely watch shows on line, but this device does not access many of these sites. I plan on purchasing a pc in the future for this task, but this really isn't an interim solution. Don't let this be a factor in your decision. In fact, I find it frustrating! I think that this television is a solid purchase. I do not regret spending the money for it and, though the screen size is much larger than my other television, its slim size makes for a clean installation. I recommend this to others to purchase.
