INTRO:
After purchasing my NomadII MP3 player (reviewed at http://www.epinions.com/content_70751981188 )I originally didn't plan on getting these earbuds, since it already came with a headset. But I wanted more comfort and ease of wearing them at work, and these jewels were it. I never really used a headset or earbuds until now, and what a difference quality sounding earbuds can make. My friend has a $20 Sony EL28's I believe earbuds, and don't compare to these babies.
OUT OF THE BOX:
You may want to be a little careful with opening this package. This one doesn't have just a few melt spots holding it closed, you'll have to use sissors, and be careful not to snip your cord. One open, you'll see a high quality ear bud. And a foldout paper manual, along with this silly little plastic thing you'll scratch your head about. I wondered so hard about it, I actually opened the manual to read about it. This was suppose to be the case for the earbuds, ack! You'd be lucky to fit two asprins inside this case it's so small and cheezy. So expect to have to find a spot in your MP3 or Walkman case for it. It also comes with three different size rubber ear pieces that are interchangable. The middle size is what is already installed when you purchase them.
OVERALL QUALITY:
These earbuds themselves are pretty amazing, there's only one little tiny hole at each end. And you get these foam rubber like inserts that hold them in your ear. It's simply amazing the great quality sound that comes out those little holes. At fifty dollars, these earbuds are about mid-stream on the Sony collection of earbuds. On the rack next to them I was a pair for $99, another pair for $149, and on the opposite side of these some for $19.99. On the reviews I read in other locations, some preferred this model to the more expensive models.
USING THEM:
The first time I used them, I kinked the cord pretty bad, and was thinking of taking them back to exchange, but due to the soft rubber, the kink worked itself out in a day. The conductive jack itself is gold plated, and snaps in as you would expect it to. The rubber inserts come in three sizes, and I use the biggest size myself, and find them very comfortable. If you sweat and move your head a lot, you may have issues with them popping out of your ears. From time to time I'll notice my volume seems to be lower, only to find out the earbuds are sliding out. This is very rare for me though, I'm usually moving my head around a lot when this happens. I have not tried these to workout in yet, but I believe the behind the head earplugs would be better for working out in. The cord connecting the two earbuds is built in a fashion designed to go behind your head. So if you open them, and notice a length difference on each side, this is why, it's meant for you to go behind the head, not in front. The section of cord going from your player to your head is very long, and could easily reach a belt or waist. I have a front pocket for my playing device, and wrap the extra length and stick it in my shirt pocket. One word of caution, do not quickly pull the earbuds out, your ears will pop then can hurt. This is because of the tight fit on the rubber inserts, it almost creats a vacuum in your ear.
SOUND QUALITY:
Oh yes, this is where these babies shine so bright. The first time you try them, your jaw will swing open and hit the ground! The bass is like nothing you heard before except maybe in a high quality stereo system. I hear insturments and sounds that I could not detect in my truck stereo. Because these plug into your ear, nobody else can hear what your playing at any volume. And you'll also find that because of this closed listening, you will be drawn more closely to what your listening to. The only problem one may have is if others need to talk with you, you won't hear them. But sometimes that's not always a bad thing is it ;-) An alternative would be to only wear one earbud and let the other hang on your shoulder.
CONCLUSION:
I've been using these earbuds for about four months now everday at work. The quality is great, and the bass is exceptional. You'll find many reviews on this model all over the web, and all pretty much agree. I purchased my locally at Fry's Electronics for $49.99 which is pretty standard after shipping. However, buy.com had the best price, but was totally out of stock on them.
