dpeck's Full Review: Sony MDR-G57G Consumer Headphones
There are a lot of new "behind the neck" styled headphones on the market. If you just go to the store and browse the shelf, it's hard to know what you're getting into. Fortunately, there are sites like epinions.com to give consumers a little bit of foresight by allowing them to read what others think about specific products.
The SONY MDR-G57's are headphones that sound better than they feel. The bass is clear, the highs are crisp, and the mids are pleasing. They sound really nice. Sound comes through loud, too. You don't have to max out your CD Player's volume control to get a nice sound.
The headphones fit snugly on your head. If you're running or exercising, they will stay in place. This is an important detail for people who are on the move.
Cable length is nice. Lots of times, headphone cables are too short. This cable is a good size. Not too long to get in the way, but not too short that you can't stick your CD Player in your backpack and run the wire around to your ears.
The biggest (and only, I think) downside to these headphones is the comfort level. After about 20 minutes, you start to feel the pressure behind your ears, where the headphones are pushing against your skull. It keeps the headphones snug and in-place, but wears on you after awhile. This is a big drawback for me, because I want to be able to put on a pair of good-sounding earphones and forget that I'm wearing them -- just get immersed in the music. It's hard to do with these.
If you're working out or running, I think these headphones will be perfect, because you'll be distracted by the discomfort in your legs or whatever else you're exercising... You probably won't even notice the fact that it pinches your head. For casual listeners, I think it's too much discomfort, and you should continue your search for the perfect "behind-the-neck" headphones.
