Let me start off by saying that originally I was content with my dishs universal remote. It controlled my TV, dish, and VCR. The only thing it wouldnt control was my DVD (KLH) player. But last year, as a birthday present, my wife bought me a home theatre. So I decided I needed a remote that could consolidate everything.
The Good.
The feature that was an absolute must was the learning feature. After going through manuals of several remotes, I quickly found that no universal remote would control my DVD player. This is where the teach feature came it. All I had to do was set up the sony to learn, point the dvds remote at the sony push one button on the dvd remote, then push the button I want assigned on the sony. Simple as that!
Even Better
The Macro functions are a definite plus. If there is an application where you have a series of steps, you can program this remote to perform the task automatically. Example: If you want to watch a DVD using your Home Theatre, you would have to:
1. Turn on your TV.
2. Turn on your Reciever.
3. Turn on your DVD.
4. Switch the TV input to your DVD player.
5. Switch the TV speakers off.
6. Switch the Receiver to DVD.
7. Set the remote to DVD remote control.
By setting up a macro, you can perform all of the above steps with the push of a button!
More Features
The buttons on the LCD will change depending on the device selected.
You can assign the mechanical buttons for one device to other devices. By default, the remote assigns the volume buttons to the TV volume for all devices, but I never use the TV speakers while watching DVDs so when the DVD player is selected, the volume buttons control the volume for my receiver.
Timer feature. You can set up your remote to perform a task via the timer. I went on vacation last year, and set the remote to turn on my TV every evening at 6 p.m. and turn it off at 11 p.m. Keep the thieves wondering if youre home or not. Its also helpful if you have a cable box or satellite receiver that cant be programmed. You can program the remote to switch the receiver to switch channels at a certain time so that your VCR will record a program.
Battery Life is very good. I havent had to swap batteries yet. I bought this remote last year (may 2002) and havent changed them yet (Feb. 2003).
Things I didnt like
The Price. At $200 this remote was a little steep.
The LCDs finish is glossy and picks up fingerprints easily. Im not sure if they could have picked a different type of plastic that would have masked all the fingerprints. I am constantly cleaning the LCD so that it doesnt get too gross.
Mechanical buttons are not backlit. Although the LCD is, if youre in a dark room its a little hard to make out what the buttons are. The Device buttons are glow-in-the-dark but the rest of the buttons have no lighting at all. Maybe its just me being nit-picky but hey thats what opinions are for.
