Among the many things the boys and I collect, PEZ is one of our favorites next to Lego. I started collecting them years ago when my pen pals sent me some. You can blame our ever growing collection of PEZ merchandise on them as them were constant enablers often sending me three or four of them with ever holiday box. Over the years we’ve amassed well over 200 dispensers and close to 100 unique PEZ related pieces of paraphernalia including a wall clock, bank, clothing, blanket and the large desk sized PEZ dispensers. While this isn’t something that I like to admit, when stress hits I pull out one of the name PEZ dispensers I carry, pop out a few candies and let the sugar take over. When PEZ started branching out and releasing other items like the Fuzzy collection and the new Bob The Builder dispensers, I started hearing about the Yummy Bubbles line and knew that I had to have them. The only local store that carried them at the time was Target and at $5.99 a pop, collecting all six designs was going to be expensive so I turned to the comic book geeks and they pointed me to an internet store that had them for half the price.
Spin Master’s PEZ Yummy Bubbles
What sets this apart from the regular PEZ dispenser is the fact that instead of candy popping out of the neck, you pop off the top and blow bubbles – but not just any bubbles – edible bubbles! The dispenser is larger than the standard candy dispensers and the six styles that are now available are pretty darn cute. The down side to this product is the size, it’s just not as portable as the smaller candy dispensers. I haven’t had any trouble with any of them leaking yet but I can guess that any amount of rough play will crack the sides or knock it out of the base resulting in a nasty leak. To use this, simply cut open a corner of the liquid bubble pouch, pour into the PEZ reservoir and insert the top of the container into the bubbles … then blow. It’s that simple. The bubble flavor that I have come across the most is grape but if this isn’t a flavor that you like, Spin Master does offer the edible bubble refills in other flavors.
As I mentioned, the size is what might turn most people off about this product. The body is four inches high – almost the size of an entire PEZ dispenser. The head size varies from style to style but most are and inch and a half high by an inch and a half wide. So what does this mean? Well, they require more space than the candy dispensers and the fat head almost guarantees that it will get scratched up or destroyed in short order. The good thing is the bubble blower wand is small and slides in and out of the PEZ chamber easily. The bubble wand is made of sturdy plastic and the thick plastic and rubber connector ensures that if properly replaced, leaks will be avoided.
Varieties & Price
The six styles that are currently available include: Bubble Boy, PEZ-O-Saurus, Peter PEZ [the colorful clown], black and white panda, an ant and the Icee bear. All six come with the started packet of bubbles and a small instruction card. These can be found in the candy section of most stores like Target, Wal-Mart and Spencer’s Gifts but Hot Topic and K-Mart have also picked up the line. These come carded on heavy plastic and are usually displayed on hang tags. I doubt these will ever get the streamlined plastic pouch packaging that the PEZ candy dispensers have since this is larger and has a liquid pouch.
Prices vary from store to store but I suggest that you shop around for the best price before you purchase one of these. I flat out refuse to play six dollars for something like this – if it did something more than blow bubbles I might consider it but hey, you can buy the stand alone packets or bottles of the edible bubbles at a fraction of the price and pour it into anything you like. I found these online with prices ranging from $2.50 to $3.50 per item with huge price breaks when purchased by the case or in bulk. These are going to be hot buys this holiday season but if retailers are expecting people to pay six bucks a pop, they will be left with cases of them come December 26th.
The Bottom Line
This makes for a great stocking stuff for those who are PEZ addicts or collect off the wall things. Since the bubbles are edible, it’s a safe toy for kids of almost all ages but parents will want to keep bubble blowing to a minimum inside the house since hardwood floors get tacky from the spent bubbles. The same can be said for carpeting, have ten or twenty bubbles pop on the carpet and you are looking at a nice black patch of dirt within a week – not to mention the possibility of attracting ants. The base of the PEZ Yummy Bubble figure is a little on the small side so it will tip over easily if bumped, this of course will cause a huge mess. On the positive side, cleaning up spills is relatively easy but I suggest using paper towels instead of a sponge, once the scent gets into a sponge it might drive you crazy after a few days. Always wipe up the area as quickly as possible to prevent it from getting tacky and hardening.
