| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: St Ambroise Oatmeal Stout |
Anderson Brewing Company is a world- class operation located in Boonville, California. This brewery produces many great beer products, which have won numerous awards in national competitions.
Stout beer is my favorite style of all. I like it sweet, dry, and every way in between. Anderson Brewing has an excellent stout in its lineup, called Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, a sweet, delicious, dark brew.
Basic Characteristics of This Beer:
Poured into a glass, this beer is completely black in color, so dark that it doesn’t allow any light to penetrate its thick, rich body. The aroma is one of sweet roasted grain and the foam level is substantial, with good retention.
Tasting this beer is a treat for your taste buds! The beer is chocolatey, malty, and roasty. It coats the mouth with a creamy smoothness. This stout finishes with a slightly bitter edge, but the overall taste experience is sweet. The aftertaste, which follows shortly afterward, is sweet and delicious.
Anderson Brewing brews this beer using pale, chocolate, and caramel malted barley, along with oats. The final product has an alcohol level, by volume, of 5.8 percent and there are 220 calories in a 12- oz. serving.
Food Compatibility:
A beer this scrumptious is best consumed all by itself, so that you can savor every last drop of its goodness. If you want to drink it with food, it would go well with many dessert foods, particularly those that include chocolate. I would suggest drinking it with chocolate pie, brownies, chocolate cake, coffee cake, even with a hot fudge sundae. It might even taste good to pour some of this stout into the sundae itself.
Final Thoughts:
Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is an excellent example of this style of beer. Its smooth, rich, creamy, chocolatey, malt sweetness is a delight to anyone’s senses.
This product, like many that are brewed by Anderson Brewing Company, has won several awards in tasting competitions. In 1990, it took home the Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival. In 1997 and 1998, it won the Gold Medal at the World Beer Championships. In 1995, it won the Platinum Medal at the World Beer Championships. It most definitely deserves these awards, and many more.
I love the way this stout has a creamy sweetness that’s balanced by the bittersweet finish of hops. It reminds me a lot of Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout (another 5- star product), since it has very similar characteristics.
Anderson Brewing Company products are not cheap. Its products are sold in many states, across the country, and it usually commands a premium price. Here, in Ohio, Anderson products retail for $7.99 per six- pack. Part of the reason is the higher than average tax that Ohio charges on alcohol. Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is easily worth the price you pay, though. If you want a quality product like this, you have to be willing to part with a few more dollars.
This is one of my all- time favorite stouts. If you can find Anderson Brewing Company products in your local beverage store, I highly recommend that you try them. And if you like stout, you will love this beer! Go out of your way to try Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. It’s worth the drive, and the price!
