| Freak369's Full Review: Stabilo Boss Original Highlighter 8-Color Desk Set... |
If the Stabilo name doesnt sound familiar, the parent company, Avery, certainly will. I had my first experience with Stabilo markers when I picked up a few of the ultra fine markers at Michaels when they were on sale. The colors were vibrant, the tips lasted forever and the barrel was nice and thin. When I came across the Stabilo Boss highlighters, I debated about getting them until I saw that they were on sale for $7.99 at Office Depot. Part of the plastic organizer that the markers rest in was chipped so I took advantage of the small imperfection and saved a few dollars. I didnt really need more highlighters, but for that price I couldnt pass it up doing the math the set of highlighters came out to about a dollar a piece [dont forget to add the tax to it]. I figured that if these performed even half as well as the ultra fine markers I purchased, Id be a happy camper.
Stabilo Boss 8 Count Highlighters
If youve never seen these highlighters, you are really in for a treat. Instead of the standard round highlighters that look like pens, this is flat and rectangular. The tips of the highlighters can be used several ways by rotating the body of the marker. You can turn it on its side and have a fine line or turn it a little more and have a thicker line. Trust me, when you get your hands on these youll be doodling up a storm. Not only do you get eight vibrant colors to choose from but you also get a black plastic desk organizer into which the highlighters slip in to so they are always within arms reach. There is a small curve on the front of the organizer for paper clips, pens or other small office essentials. The ink flows evenly from the tip and will hold up to a lot of use, even if you have a heavy hand or use them for an extended period of time. I suggest recapping these when they are not in use to avoid having them dry out, Ive left the cap off of them for about 30 minutes and had no problem picking it back up and using it with having to get the ink flowing again by applying pressure to the tip.
Ive used these on ink jet print outs as well as photocopies with no trouble. I was worried that some of the black ink might get picked up by the tip of the highlighter and ruin it but so far these have been a great asset. The boys have started using these for their notebooks and workbooks and like the fact that they have so many different colors to choose from. They refuse to take them with them on field trips though because they take up a lot more room than regular highlighters. The design of the highlighter is easy for adults or kids to use and since it is flat and rectangular rather than round you dont have to worry about it rolling all over the place. There isnt a smell or odor when you remove the cap so working with these in an unventilated area isnt an issue. The ink dries quickly but if you are going over areas a few times you might end up with some on the bottom part of your palm. Ive only had smudges a few times and that was completely my fault I went over the same are a few times to try and see if the colors would blend in with each other and I guess I saturated the paper and the ink smeared.
Colors
When you first look at this pack, it sort of looks like there are some duplicate colors until you pop off the tops and start writing with them it looks like you are getting three pinks and two greens. The pinks are a light shade of purple / lilac, standard pink and red. It is pretty hard to judge them from the photo that is listed, but yes indeed, there is a red in the pack. The two greens are nice, one is a straight standard green and the other is a lime green. If I had to complain about any of the colors it would be the blue I would have liked to have gotten something a bit darker the one that you get in this set is sort of a light or baby blue. The orange and yellow are nice and bright and by most standards are fluorescent which really makes them stand out from the rest of the colors. You can blend the colors if you are using them on thick paper and some of the color combinations are pretty cool. Make sure you clean the tips off after using them on top of other colors so the ink wont get absorbed into the barrel and ruin the hue of the highlighter.
Things To Know
If you want to save a few dollars or simply dont want the plastic desk organizer with the highlighters, you can pick up this marker set in a plastic snap lock case. It has all the same colors but without the organizer. The one with the plastic case is great for people who need to take several different colored highlighters with them or want to avoid clutter on their desk. Same highligher, different packaging.
The caps snap on tightly but you have to make sure that you press them on until you hear a loud snap. The caps are prone to pop off if they arent pressed on all the way. If you have any type of wrist ailment or cant grasp things tightly you can remove the cap by twisting it a little, this will result in the cap rotating off of the base. The ink will stain certain types of clothing but Ive always been able to get the majority out of it from cotton t-shirts, shorts or jeans. Ive never been able to get it out of anything that has a spandex or lycra blend so user beware. There arent any washing instructions with this but Ive hard the best luck using a warm water and laundry detergent as soon as possible.
The Bottom Line
If you are someone that likes a lot of variety when using highlighters, then this eight pack is defiantly something that you should check out. Its available with the black plastic desk organizer or in the plastic pouch and as I mentioned earlier, I picked this up at a discount since there was a small scratch on the organizer. Having the ability to use the fine point or fat chisel tip makes these highlighters a nice investment. I havent had any trouble with them drying out, the caps cracking or uneven ink flow so for the $7.99 I paid for this set, I have already gotten my moneys worth from them.
As always, thanks for the visit!
