Hikki's Full Review: Suikoden II for PlayStation 1
With the incredible original Suikoden released by Konami a few years before, its follow-up would have trouble overcoming and overwhelming the crowd once again. Fortunately for us game players, Konami came through with an amazing sequel that deals with warfare, magic, friendship, and betrayal.
The game features an amazing 108 characters that can become your friends and help you on your quest. These friends eventually become part of your army, and help you win in a new feature to Suikoden II, map battles. You can also build up your castle, which serves as a home to many townspeople and your allies; it also contains a harbor, a restaurant, places to purchase supplies, and much, much more. Unfortunately, one of the most impressive features is only available to fans who have played the original Suikoden and have kept their saved games on their memory cards. With the saved information, you can unlock hidden storylines in the game. The game takes up 2 memory card blocks and, like most RPGs, it is for 1 player only.
I have always been interested in RPGs, and let me tell you, Suikoden II is a very good game. Its load times are rather quick and the colors are vivid, especially in the magic attacks and the animated sequences. Although the music didn’t suit me, it certainly wasn’t bad. One thing I didn’t particularly like was its battle engine. I felt that picking your actions (whether you want to use magic, perform a physical attack, use an item, or defend) before ANYONE did ANYTHING was a little too amateur for me. Using an active battle system would have been more challenging and it would have kept me more involved in the battles. Overall, though, I thought it was a pretty good game and I definitely got my money’s worth.
