kbolton72's Full Review: Sunbeam 5891 Bread Machine
Nobody who knows me would ever accuse me of being Martha Stewart. Much more like Stuart Little, always getting something knocked over, spilled or ruined. That is me trying to bake bread in bread loaf pans, from scratch, just my mom and grandma before me did. They succeeded. I have not. Sooooo...the next best thing is to cheat a little and get a bread maker!! Now, while I have to admit, this too, broke within 6 months of me using this, but I hold no ill will. It was probably my fault, I overdid something. But it was great while it lasted! I have since upgraded, but will always be grateful that this machine took it easy on me trying to learn!
Let me tell you about the Sunbeam 5891 Bread Maker. While not "State of the art", it had it's charms. For example, it was easy to use, all I had to do was combine ingredients, set the timer and mode, and walk away. It has a removable pan that can bake up to two pound loaves, one at a time. With a non-stick finish, there is no crisco and flour that my elders before me had to deal with. The bread maker comes with a recipe book that tells you what ingredients you *must* have (Yeast, etc) and then gave suggestions as to what *kinds* of bread you can make. I made all kinds, from chocolate, to garlic herb, to cheddar, to raisen! I also got several of my concoctions off of the web. I just googled "homemade bread recipes".
This machine is built to have extras inside it. It bakes anything you put in the bread recipe to perfection, without burning or being gooey. All you had to do to get started was to open the top lid and decide if you wanted a 13 hour slow bake (set in the morning before work to come home to heavenly smells) or if you wanted to have it baked quickly, to make as many loaves as possible. It even had an express function that baked under an hour! The control panel was LED and a touch pad would program one of 12 baking choices.
It bakes at 600 watts, and makes the house smell beautiful! Easy to clean with the easy to take out pan, and mixing paddle and all you have to do is wipe down the rest. It is a bit bulky at 14" X 19" X 14", and it does take up some room, so if you have a island that has an electrical outlet, or even on top of your stove if you have room. If you are making a day out of your baking, then you will want to clean a table off for your loaves to cool.
This is wonderful for this time of year, whether you are giving it as a gift, making homemade bread as gifts (especially for your kids teachers) or just filling your home with the smells of Christmas past! Some of my favorites have been in addition to those mentioned earlier: Apple nut bread, Egg nog bread, Cranberry orange, Butterscotch, Papaya, Sour cream and White chocolate rasberry! My son is going on a gluten free diet within a few weeks, so I had to go out and buy a new one, which makes this model look like child's play. However, for the price and simplicity, you can't beat it!
