clooneyfan's Full Review: Sunsweet Pitted Cherry Essence Prunes, 7 oz (Pack ...
A man went to the doctor and complained that he had the most terrible constipation. The doctor examined him and then gave him a prescription for some tablets to be taken last thing at night. Two weeks later the patient returned for a check-up and the doctor asked him how his constipation was. The doctor was rather surprised when the man gloomily answered that the pills worked fine and that he went every morning at 7.30. "So why the long face?" asked the doctor. "Because I don't get up until 8 o'clock!" replied the patient.
That little joke is to break the ice in discussing an embarrassing topic: chronic constipation. Constipation is a problem that troubles millions of Americans, including me.
So why are my intestinal woes being discussed in a review about prunes?
Prunes are nature's laxative. Anyone who suffers from constipation should be eating them regularly. Unfortunately, I hate the taste of them. This would have been the end of the story if I hadn’t developed bleeding hemorrhoids. I become desperate for a more natural way to….ahem….soften the biweekly log jam caused by years of antidepressant use.
I aspired to be like my husband who pooped on a daily basis. Unfortunately, my medication caused major intestinal backups, I was lucky if I went twice a week. I drank more water and exercised. I took stool softeners but they lost their effectiveness after awhile. I mixed fiber in with my morning OJ but it still wasn’t enough. I was miserable.
My mom told me to try Sunsweet's Lemon, Orange or Cherry flavored prunes. I was a little skeptical that the flavoring would mask the taste enough for my liking but I had nothing to lose. I went to the store and bought a bag of Sunsweet Pitted Cherry Essence Prunes. To my surprise, they were quite palatable.
A quick review of their nutritional information assured me that Sunsweet Pitted Cherry Essence Prunes are one of the better choices I could have made! One serving size is 5 prunes which have about 100 calories. This is a little higher than eating fresh fruit but it’s still a very healthy snack. It packs in more potassium per serving than a banana. Prunes are also low in sodium and have no fat or cholesterol. Each serving give you 3 g of dietary fiber.
I had initially planned on a 2 week experiment. I would eat 3 – 5 prunes a day and evaluate if it made a significant improvement in the frequency or consistency of my bowel movements.
The results after just one week were amazing. Not only did I poop more frequently, but the consistency was softer. I no longer had to do Lamaze breathing each time I used the bathroom.
It’s been a month now since I started that experiment. I’m so impressed with the positive changes in my bowel habits that I’m continuing to eat Sunsweet Pitted Cherry Essence Prunes on a daily basis.
