| jankp's Full Review: Sylvia Browne's Book of Angels Books |
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This review of Sylvia Browne's Book of Angels continues my psychiatrist character's exploration of better ways to give therapy than drugs and the couch. Her clients are Epinions members I am very fond of like 29th_Candidate and DavidMac, but some females have been featured. A link to all these appears on my profile page.

I suddenly feel so tired, like a fog spilling over my brain. If sex surrogates are this jankp's idea of a joke, I fail to appreciate the humor. And surely 29th didn't put her up to it! Maybe a book will help me escape for a while, relieve the beginnings of a tension headache hopefully. I scan my little bookshelf in the back corner of my office with the thought of enjoying some more of Sons And Lovers by D.H. Lawrence, but the bizarre glow of a book I'd never seen before caught my eye. Perplexed I wonder if I needed a nap instead. My curiosity, however, conspires against my better judgment and I grab at the glowing book.
One look at the title and my hopes plunge. Maybe I was expecting a rare classic promising hours of fascinating insight into human nature, much like Lawrence?s books. I do know I wasn't expecting the famous psychic Sylvia Browne's Book of Angels.
"Read it, Doc!"
I twirl around, but nobody's there. Now that sounded like jankp, it did. Oh, how silly of me! The mind is so susceptible to suggestions. Still I am drawn for some odd reason to the book and sit down to read the tall hardback of 223 pages. After noticing how many books and audiotapes this creature has spawned, I peruse the Table of Contents: (She has an Author's Note, also)

About the Author
About the Artist (Christina Simonds)
I soon gather that her spirit guide from "the Other Side" works with angels in hopes of helping us humans, especially if we are receptive to the idea, and the guide (Francine) has informed the author of the ten kinds of angels, two of which are new to this book. Each chapter begins with a pencil drawing of a strong-featured angel, mostly females not of the cute variety and one even is black, and, except for a Koran verse, angelic verses from the Bible.
Browne wisely recommends "Take with you what you want, and leave the rest." What, though, do I want from this book? I become more frustrated with this question as I further read, succumbing to small naps along the way. It starts off okay, explaining her mixed religious background, being psychic all her life and having studied angels in all the major religions for twenty years. Francine has supplemented most of what she knows of the "trillions of angels" with great strength both physically and spiritually, who act as extensions of God's Ultimate Love for us.
But then it starts to annoy me. I learn that angels of all types have wings with different colored glowing tips, their own stones and animals to represent them, are androgynous with no genitalia, purified, not humanized, emotions and intelligence, and are always beautiful representing all the races. They can slightly modify my life chart if asked and appear in human form, yet prefer to communicate telepathically or through spirit guides.
Hmm. Could jankp be some kind of angel? Ha. She does have big eyebrows and a firm chin, so perhaps?
Interspersed with her information on how angels have specific colored wing tips and purposes, like singing and getting rid of dead, dark spirits (don't ask) and that the Other Side's topography corresponds perfectly to Earth's, I am treated to fanatical letters from people having seen angels with wings or in human form, usually to comfort, protect and sometimes heal.
The range of questions in the Frequently Asked Questions chapter include: do angels need rest or sleep? (no); why do some religions portray angels as warriors or avengers who rise up against those who defy God and His teachings? (that's a fantasy); and if angels have so much power, why can't they always help us? (we don't realize how much they do in our lives). I enjoy this section more than most others.
After skimming through the rest, I close the book decisively just as my phone shatters the silence and my amused contemplation of angels helping with therapy, especially those surreal meditations each chapter closes with.
"Dr. Freudine's office," I mutter. All of a sudden trills of joyous laughter burst out, neither feminine or masculine exactly. For a few long moments I can't think of what to do, then press the "talk" button. Still the laughter continues. What does she, it, want, anyhow?
"We can help you with your practice, Sigmunda Freudine. Just remember that...and smile!"
I grab my bag and fish for the keys while rising and striding to the door. Smile. Yeah, I'm overworked for sure. But then, I can't help but wonder...if jankp isn't an angel, and there are no fallen angels according to the book, well, what is she?
