| jcotellese's Full Review: TDK MOJO Personal CD Player |
I waited a while before purchasing an MP3 player because I wanted the products to mature. I purchased a cheapo MP3 player and returned it a week later because it had difficulty playing back some MP3s with strange bit rates.
You can run into this problem when obtaining MP3s from various sources. The programs the record MP3s have their own way of doing things. If they do something wrong or at least not what the player is expecting then the file won't play. Having a player that can deal with slight problems in the file will make you life much easier.
After returning the cheap player, I decided on the TDK Mojo. The first thing that struck me was the excellent display. I loved the fact that I could get the artist and track information of the files I was playing. Most cheaper players do not include this option. Since MP3 disks can hold hundreds of songs, knowing what track you are on is rather handy.
The Mojo also has some nice organization features that while not without problems (see my negatives below) do help bring order to disks with a lot of files. The Mojo can, through it's menu, allow you to select songs based on title, artist, genre, or playlist. However, the interface isn't immediately intuitive esp. when trying to select all or no songs. Read the manual. I once had a CD in a state where I could only play 10 out of the ~100 songs on disk. Removing and reinstalling the disk didn't help since the Mojo remembers the last played disk and settings for that disk.
Sound quality is as good as can be expected from a portable player in a cost conscious market.
Of course, this great player is not without faults. The most grossly neglected feature is scan. If you want to play any longer MP3 files (audio books, live recordings) and can't listen to everything in one session forget this player. I ended up splitting my audiobooks into smaller 10 minute chunks as an alternative to not having scan. There is nothing difficult about adding this feature and was an extremely poor decision on TDK's part.
The other problem I have is the front panel navigation. The navigation controls include 4 arrows in the typical diamond pattern. Left and Right control previous and next tracks. Up and down control volume. This is where I have the problem. I really think the up and down arrows need to control the current grouping. What I mean is if you select the Artist grouping then up/down switches artist, if you select the Genre grouping then up/down select genre. This makes things alot easier when you are trying to navigate in a situation where you can't see the buttons (like a car).
If you can live without these faults and want a decent very compatible player then pickup the Mojo.
