Tara Thai is absolutely wonderful! I have eaten at two out of their three locations, Bethesda and Rockville. They have different menu items at these two locations, however, the atmosphere and the food is great!
If you are a connoisseur of Thai food you will not be disappointed here. If you are not, what a great place to learn! The menu has the standard names that most people have trouble pronouncing correctly, but underneath each is a simple description that gives you enough detail to choose your meal appropriately.
I love the Heavenly Wings, the Spring Rolls, and the Papaya Salad appetizers. Also their presentation is colorful in most cases, with the use of variously shaped and colored plates, and brilliant in others. When you order the Red Snapper whole fish it is brought to your table whole, the waiter then fillets it and slices it for easy removal and eating while keeping it in whole fish form. It was both tasty and nicely presented.
From there, I have enjoyed every dish I had except for their spicy lamb dish that left me wanting for flavor.
The Atmosphere in the Rockville location is very trendy. It has glass mirrors on the wall overlaid with a fish/under the sea type of motif with a stylish edge to it using pastel and silver colors.
The tables are more of a metallic color with booths that seat two and some larger tables around the sides and back. The bar is also a nice place to sit and eat at this location if there are just two of you and you do not wish to wait for a table. It is not your standard drinking/smoking bar. It is more of a eating/nibbling/drinking bar also surrounded with mirrors and lively pastel coloring.
The Bethesda location is more standard with round tables, wood molding and darker green coloring around. It is much quieter there than at the Rockville location but the wait is just as long and again, the menu is different than their Rockville location which I mentioned earlier.
The prices for appetizers and soup range from $4 to $7 and the entrees run from $8 to $13 normally with a few dishes that have seasonal pricing.
The service has always been excellent. The wait staff has always been pleasant, efficient and knowledgeable. They make it a shear pleasure to eat there.
