Pros: Has it all, minus an warranty against OB's. Great control!
Cons: Once again, tinkering with the weights can lead to trouble...
The Bottom Line: Are you really gonna pass at the newest r7? Come on...get going already!

| lirubis's Full Review: TaylorMade SuperQuad TP Driver |
Having failed miserably to love previous r7 versions, my expectations did not run high when I heard about yet another r7 version coming out to the market. All this "movable weight technology" thing really seems to me like a sore excuse to make golfers pay more for a golf club. When I tested the 425 version I started to get better results, feeling more comfortable with the r7, it was no longer a struggle to get the ball where I wanted. Yet, the feel, the sound, the overall sensation failed to match that of my less-complicated, trustworthy and reliable plain Ti Launcher.
Coming out of a neck injury, I am looking at a bunch of new drivers out there (I kinda went off the air in frustration...LOL!) and for some reason, the first of the new toys to be available to me was, who would have guess it...the Newest r7! Thank goodness I have a lot of buddies who just cant wait ti get their hands on the latest gear, and finally last weekend, I got a crack at trying several new big sticks.
LOOKS
Hmmm....black is nice for a change. Makes the 460cc head look smaller, a strange but useful visual effect for me. Since I only had the chance to test the stock Fuji shaft (yellow) in S flex , I guess it was my lucky day. The weight ports looks as weird as always (Im just not used to the sight of all that stuff on the belly of a driver...LOL!), but since I had the chance to tinker with the weights a bit, I set it to the mid-draw trajectory setting. The look of this driver is very sporty, like a race car, very appealing to my eye.
PERFORMANCE
Im going to be very straight with you guys today: this driver IS hot. You just cant seem to miss with this thing! I could keep the drives under control swinging at 70%, 80%, 90% power. Better yet: more than half of the "all-out" swings ended up deep down the fairway. This thing hist LONG on all shots, much more forgiving than the r7 quad I hated so much 2 years ago. The shaft loads perfectly for my speed and tempo, very adaptable to your swing shape IMO. The sound has been improved, I like the dry "crack" on center hits, feels very powerful and perhaps the least "hollow" sound in a driver that I can remember.
This is not the most forgiving head, definitely. But compared to previous r7's, this one takes the cake. However, I think the SuperQuad's best feature is control. Boy, I could almost call my shots on saturday! setting it to "neutral" was the best discovery I made about it, because it was a lot easier to fade or draw tee shots, almost as easy as my 3 wood. Nice, very nice.
Is there something I did not like? The grip, as usual. I still prefer the GP Decade's look and feel, no the fluffy sticky stuff of Winn's G8's this driver had. However, there is nothing else on the "bad" list that I can add. This driver is absolutely much better than ANY previous r7 I have tried. Perhaps I can even consider buying it...
Bottom line: This is a driver with lots of control and promotes confidence like few can claim. The S flex stock shaft (yellow) may feel a bit too soft but it works REALLY nice for players with SS between 95 and 110 mph, IMO. You can tinker with the settings any way you want, but for me the trick that did it was to just leave it on "neutral" and let the hands and arms do the rest.
Yes, for the first time I admit to actually liking and wanting to buy an r7 for myself. That should give you an idea about how much I was impressed with this stick. Of course, you have to try it yourself before buying, and seriously recommend a LM test to find the best shaft/flex and weight config for you. But chances are, you are going to love what this driver has to offer.
