ivplay's Full Review: Angela Wilkes - The Big Book of Dinosaurs: A First...
My wife recently bought a few books for the boys, and by far their favorite has been The Big Book of Dinosaurs by Angela Wilkes. Published in 1993 by DK books (Dorling Kindersley Limited), this is an oversized, full color book measuring approximately 14" high by 11" across.
The 32-page book is broken down into 12 sections by traits exhibited by certain dinosaurs. For instance, There is a section called Beaky Dinosaurs that showcases the Gallimimus, and other sections called Terrible Teeth and Mighty Meat Eaters, both of which showcase the Tyrannosaurus. Also present in the book is a 'to scale' page with two kids and a whole pack of dinosaurs. The reader can get a feel for the dimensions of several dinosaurs in relation to a human without having to visit a museum via this page. The last page of the book is an Index with a pronunciation guide for each of the dinosaurs as well as the page(s) on which you can find them. Unless you are a paleontologist, this will come in handy!
The book does an excellent job of exploring several different types of dinosaurs with several examples on each page. The pictures range from actual photos of fossil exhibits and fully fleshed models found in museums to artist's renditions of what the dinosaur may have looked like. The dinosaurs are not shown in their natural environment as other books have done, but that doesn't seem to detract from its popularity in our household. There are tidbits of information presented on each dinosaur and questions are posed to make your kids think. The pages are constructed of a thick, glossy paper, giving a nice feel and look to the pages.
Our boys have loved dinosaurs for quite a while. We took them to the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman last year and they were like kids in a candy store! They love this book, and it has been a favorite bed-time story since the day we bought it. More than that, they will pull this book out at all times of the day and sit down to flip through it, showing us which dinosaur is which. The Big Book of Dinosaurs is a good learning book with information and pictures to keep the kids interested!
