Yeah, I should wait to read the rest of Potter. But I'm sticking with the favorites of my own childhood!

Yeah, I think I've seen that story too. Haven't read it though. I wonder if it's written in the same vein, or something else. Like how Tolkien's Adventures of Tom Bombadil were very much something 'else'.

I wouldn't quite put Harry Potter in the same class yet either, although I must tell you that (excluding the fifth book which was by far the worst in the series) every single time I've come in contact with HP I like it better. The first time I read the books I borrowed all three over a weekend (there were only three then). I found the first book so-so, read book 2 only because it was already sitting by my bed and I had a friend who was expecting a report on what I thought. I liked it better, but I still didn't quite see what the fuss was. It took the third book for me to really see why people were going ga-ga. Then the second time I read the series I found I liked the first two better than I had before although the third book was still far superior. Then when the fourth book came out I read all four in order (hate just reading one later book in a series) and I liked 1&2 even more, still really liked 3, and absolutely fell in love with the fourth book. Etc. etc. and so forth - now I really like all of the first four books.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think one reading of just the first book is a good basis for judging Harry Potter. I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on the later books once you've read them all.

As for her not reading Prydain, well that's her loss. You tried to educate her :)

BTW, did you know there's a little picture book called Coll and His White Pig written between The Black Cauldron and The Castle of Llyr? I just ran into it at the library. It takes place before the Chronicles and tells the story of how they discovered Hen Wen is an oracular pig.

I convince my wife to try The Book of Three and she puts it down after ten pages. Then she makes me read Harry Potter. Is putting it down even an option for me?

No matter what she says, I still like Chronicles of Prydain better that Potter. It's simply more rooted. And is Eilonwy really any more dated than Hermione? Though I have to disagree on Gurgi. He always annoyed me. Too much an inferior Smeagol.

Well, good to read your review. And if I have anything to say about it, our kids will read this before Harry Potter. Just so that they have a point of reference before they go off babbling about how great Potter is.
