jcgrow's Full Review: Armin Brott and Jennifer Ash - The Expectant Fathe...
I have to admit that I've done my work as an expectant father backwards. Before reading The Expectant Father, I read The New Father, also by Armin Brott. I couldn't get my hands on The Expectant Father as soon as I would have liked to, so I read what was available. I loved reading The New Father as I have not loved reading a book in a long time, feeling grateful that someone had finally written a book for guys who actually care about their kids and their partners!
Now that I have read The Expectant Father, I have the same feelings. Brott and Ash have created a desperately needed resource for desperate dads-to-be. I feel able to be curious now that someone has acknowledged that it's okay for me to be interested in my partner's pregnancy.
I am a little disappointed, however, that the information in The Expectant Father is not quite as detailed as what I found in The New Father. For example, Brott and Ash talk about the importance of the attendance of expectant fathers at their partners' prenatal examinations, but they do not bother to tell us how to do it! I am about to go in with my partner to our first prenatal exam today and I have to admit that I don't know what to do at an OB/GYN. Why should I? It would have been helpful if Brott and Ash had told me what I'm supposed to do? Where exactly am I supposed to be when she is in the stirrups? Holding her hand? In the waiting room? Looking at the ceiling whistling and pretending not to notice? Help me, guys, I don't want to be a klutz.
Really, this book is invaluable. It gives expectant dads something to focus on instead just being nervous and twittery around their pregnant partners. My only complaint is that I want more of what this book has to offer.
