Ahoy, there be SPOILERS ahead!!!
This was the second part of my movie double header last weekend. I had been looking forward to this movie because I love Sandra Bullock and I love Ryan Reynolds, although I had my reservations about the two of them together. Why? He seems a bit young for her. Ok, now I know there’s nothing wrong with that. But in my mind there’s certain people-combinations I don’t like. I don’t like the older woman-younger man scenario. I don’t like known lesbians and/or known gays to be in heterosexual relationships on screen. That’s why I refuse to watch Anne Heche and Harrison Ford in "6 Days, 7 Nights". I don’t buy it. But maybe that’s just me.
Story in a nutshell - woman is going to be deported so she makes her male assistant marry her in order to stay in the country. Hey nothing like a felony being committed to make me laugh.
Sandra Bullock is "Margaret" ("The Net", "Miss Congeniality I and II"), Ryan Reynolds is Andrew ("Blade Trinity", "Smokin’ Aces", "Adventureland"), Mary Steenburgen is Andrew’s mom ("Four Christmases", "Step Brothers"), Craig T. Nelson is Andrew’s dad ("Poltergeist", "Coach" television series), Betty White is Andrew’s grandma ("Golden Girls" television series) and Oscar Nunez is "Ramone".
I like how Sandra Bullock can seem like every-girl and how she comes across nice and sweet and even when she was supposedly mean and tough in her editing job, she still didn’t come across that way. The code word at the company for when she was in the building was "the witch is on her broom".
I like how characters that you’re not really expecting much from, really make the movie enjoyable. In this case it was "Ramone". Not only was the "only stripper on the island" at Margaret’s bachelorette party, but he was the clerk who ran the general store and the minister at the end who was going to marry them. I actually thought when Grandma Annie had a heart attack that he would be the doctor, but he wasn’t.
I guess my favorite scene was when Margaret was taking a shower and realized she didn’t have a towel. Not realizing Andrew’s outside on the balcony, she runs to the closet to get a towel and crashes butt-naked into butt-naked Andrew. The way they showed her covering herself with the pillows and her arms was very funny and I applaud Sandra Bullock for doing a nude scene (even though you can’t see any "naughty bits").
I thought the movie was slow at spots. It could have been tightened up a bit and about 15-20 minutes could have been cut out or at least put some more comical moments in the slow periods. I was surprised that Betty White had one of the larger roles in the movie, but was glad she did. Without her the movie would have been as dull as dishwater.
The relationship between Andrew and his dad was never fleshed out (as to why they really didn’t get along) except for the fact that Andrew’s family owned most of the businesses in the town and his dad wanted him to come back and run the businesses while he wanted to stay in New York. The relationship between Andrew and his mom wasn’t there at all. I realize the main focus of the film was on Andrew and Margaret but if we’re going to be "spending time" with Andrew’s family in Alaska a bit more background on the relationships would have been helpful.
The preview pretty much tells the whole story. At first it’s a sham marriage so Margaret won’t be deported but they fall in love over the weekend at Andrew’s parents house and get married at the very end.
One of the funny, well actually I guess it’s ironic, things about this movie is that Sandra Bullock plays a Canadian and Ryan Reynolds plays an American when in reality, Sandra Bullock is American and Ryan Reynolds is from Canada.
So did I like this movie? Yes. Although the outcome was predictable, I loved watching Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds and their chemistry together. If you like either one of those actors, go see the movie. If you don’t, don’t go.
