b_lawhorn's Full Review: Tupac Shakur - The Rose That Grew from Concrete
I try to have an open mind, so when my 18 year old nephew asked for this book of poetry, I decided to check out the book and perhaps purchase it as a Christmas present. I had doubts about the contents, having heard terrible stories in the press about Tupac and assumed that the poetry would be filled with violence and hatred.
I logged on to the Amazon.com site and pulled up the information concerning the book of poetry. Luckily, Amazon.com is very good about showing excerpts to preview any selections available. I was totally amazed at the poetry that I was reading in the excerpts. The poetry was filled with incredible and insightful messages.
Hoping that the entire book would mirror the excerpts, I ordered the book. When it arrived three days later, I sat down with a cup of coffee and began scanning the pages of this book. Within seconds I realized that I didn't want to just scan the book --- I wanted to read every word, every line. I was totally amazed.
Despite whatever bad press Tupac may have had during his life and his career, this book of poetry reflects a sensitive and deeply emotional poet. I loved the style of the book, showing the hand-written poetry on the left facing the typed version on the right. I enjoyed looking at the scribblings and scratchings of the hand-written version. I felt as though I had been invited into this young man's heart and soul while reading his verses.
I gave my nephew the book on Christmas day and was delighted that he liked it so well. We discussed our favorite selections and found that we both liked many of the same ones. I was glad that we shared this book and that we could talk together about the meaning of the writings.
I would recommend this book of poetry to anyone, young or old, who appreciate writing from the soul. Don't let the media perception of Tupac ruin your chance to enjoy this book of poetry.
