wenwater45's Full Review: Hannah Holmes - The Secret Life of Dust: From the ...
Dust is the topic for Hannah Holmes book entitled, The Secret Life of Dust: From the Cosmos to the Kitchen Counter, the Big Consequences of Little Things. In today's society there are many things we overlook and deem insignificant. Dust is one of those insignificances. Dust is usually perceived as something repulsive, especially when company comes over. Much to the mortification of neat freaks, dust is everywhere. In fact, Holmes wrote that, "Every time you inhale thousands upon thousands of motes swirl into your body." This a pleasant thought as you have probably inhaled by now.
Dust is not only in your house but outside and it is even in space. Of course when people do not see something, they tend to forget that it is there and they do not realize how amazing it is.
Another fact about dust is that it can actually be harmful as well as beneficial. For example, coal dust which triggers the disease known as Black Lung. Also different sizes of dust can affect human health. The smaller the dust particle, the easier it is for that particle to wedge itself in the human body and into the delicate lungs to do the damage.
While many rare diseases make headlines, we do not realize that a broader epidemic is at hand: Asthma. As researchers go into a person's house to analyze dust, they often start by looking at what is floating in the air. Now listen to this, if you are already suffering from Asthma or allergies, the last thing you should do is try to clean up your house dust because it is an effective method for moving dust from the floor to the air, where you inhale.
It is amazing to read all of the facts about dust because readers realize just how far science has come and how the world has created advanced technology and knowledge. To finally be able to comprehend something as little and barely visible as dust is incredible. Of course there is still a lot to learn about dust, but at least we have a general idea about it.
The book that Holmes has written is very fascinating and there is a whole lot more than the information in this review about dust. As Peter Tyson, author of The Eighth Continent states about this book, "A fascinating journey into the unseen flecks that underpin our world and those beyond."
