| slayek's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite 1905-S301 (PS192U-011JWX) PC Not... |
I bought mine from Bestbuy from a Christmas sale for just 1000 bucks in 2001. That was the beginning of a smooth journey of Toshiba and me. I never have a single glitch with this machine.
Bad things- It's heavy, by no means you can leave it on your lap and work for hours. It can get really hot under heavy usage, so be careful when you use it as laptop. LCD screen is bright but the viewing angle is very narrow. Sound quality is just horrible, don't even think about recording via soundcard. Like others Toshiba dumped a lot of valueless software for this machine. Not at all suitable for playing games. DVD playing i snot at it's best. Useless CD burning software.
Good points- 2GHz is well suited for my need. I slapped up another 256 MB ram and so it's smoothly handle large graphic files. Ample storage (40GB)helped me keep all my MP3's in one place. Battery life is quite satisfactory with 2.5 hrs. PCMCIA card slots and Firewire ports added great functionality to this machine.
The only bad thing about this lappy is the low RAM. I found it painful to work in photoshop with my huge scanned .tiff files. Things get better only after adding another stick of 256MB kingston RAM. However, like most of the laptops, you can not really change both of the RAM sticks by yourself. So any further upgrade is not quite possible as I have to sell my old one. The other slot can only accessed by openning the keyboard which is not an easy job for a regular user and this will also void the warranty.
Had to use Toshiba customer service once and yeah, they are friendly, but not really knowledgeable. I have to fiddle around for an hour before getting the right answer from them.

Update:-
It was a terrible experience to deal with Toshiba customer service. My laptops CDRW/DVD drive died after 7 months from original warranty. I though I was saved by the adittional warranty. Took them over two moths to service the laptop only to deliver a laptop with faulty harddrive case. Have to sent the laptop again for a proper repair. The most irritating thing is the systematic lie from the CSRs at Toshiba. I will never buy a Toshiba product and advise the reader not to deal with them in any respect.
