cddull's Full Review: Pressman Toy Tri-Ominos Game
It seems like many moons ago that this little game entered my life. In reality it was about 4 years ago, I had just made a decision to cohabitate with a girlfriend and we were going through the process of what to do with all our newfound time together. I could probably write a whole separate piece on the change from the dating stage to the living together stage, but alas I digress. Anyway we had some free time in the evenings and she amazingly enough didn't want to watch sports for 5 hours a night. I asked her what she liked to do and she introduced me to Tri-Ominos.
I'll admit I wasn't thrilled at the prospect. I'm more the Trivial Pursuit type and not much of a board gamer in general. I was quite surprised to find that this game is roughly as addictive as heroin plus sex with a supermodel and a little more. It is a simple game based on matching numbers on triangular pieces of plastic. You get points by matching and getting rid of your pieces. There are bonuses for completing shapes on the board. You play to 400 points and you can understand the game in about 5 minutes. Like many games there are some strategic nuances but not a lot, don't be frightened. For months it became a game where you would take it out at 8:30 on a weeknight and for get to look at the clock again until 11:30.
Now, those of you who only scan reviews have probably given me a low rating for putting this in the wrong topic area. Wrong!!! My affair with Tri-Ominos was only a few months long. It started to fade as life grew complicated and time grew short. I remember it and the person who showed it to me in a special place. I thought I had tucked all of this away in my heart until I started teaching grade school this spring. Today's child tends to not exactly hunger for traditional learning, it works better if they learn almost by accident. Games are a great way to go about this. Take it from me: Children love Tri-Ominos. They would spend their "free-choice" time playing this for days at a time. I don't believe it ever occurred to them they were working on math facts the whole time.
There are lots of variations on this game that work in the classroom. In my first grade room, a version called "Tens" was quite popular as the addition was little less challenging. Children still pick up addition facts and get an introduction to geometric concepts. It's really remarkable to see. If you teach I would buy it tomorrow and if you are a parent, this is a great way to avoid the long summer of forgetting. Let your kids go back to school in September with their synapses firing, play a game of Tri-Ominos.
