Pros: The most original, strange, wonderful and intense piece of music my cat ever heard.
Cons: Your family may want you locked away because of it. Probably for the best.
The Bottom Line: There's something Right about this music - the moral tells you to be subversive, to be a pioneer.
In 'Wild Life': 'find me uh cave 'n talk to bears'.
kcatdesire's Full Review: Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magi...
Beethoven would have liked this album, perhaps. The tragic thing is he was deaf, but it's so massive and at first incomprehensible that love occasionally approaches whilst listening to the song 'China Pig' - the story of one boy and how he has to kill his pig to buy shoes, and to live. The triumph of man over beast? Or how we kill kill kill? 'Dachau blues' is about the Holocaust, 'Ant Man Bee' about racism (with the line 'All the ants in God's garden, they can't get along'). Probably to most affecting lyric of all is 'man's lived a million years 'n' still he kills' from 'Steal softly Thru snow'.
The guitars, saxophones (two played simultaneously by Beefheart on 'Ant man Bee'), bass, vocals (the lion-roar of Beefheart) and drums all sort of merge together to create something stupendous, liberating and also cacophonous.
Repeated listening is required and advised, though 'Moonlight on Vermont' and 'The Blimp' are instant classics - ear-friendly rhythms and melodies abound.
This album is reality: everything springs to a single epoch from all different angles; sense tells you it should not exist, and yet it does. It deserves superlatives, especially as it has songs called 'Neon meate dream of a Octafish' and 'Bill's Corpse'.
