| bluefishie's Full Review: Turf Supper Club |
When I was told I was being taken out to "The Turf Club", I honestly didn't know what to think. Turf Club? Could be a ritzy place, since the word "Club" was mentioned, or it could be a dive bar, since word "Club" is mentioned.
I admit I was somewhat apprehensive.
The Turf Club is located in a mostly residential area. There are some coffee shops nearby and a mechanic's shop is nextdoor. When you look at it from the outside, don't be scared even though their sign is lit by a neon sign and there's a bouncer periodically going inside and out.
Inside, the decor all has to do with horse racing (of course, Turf!). There is a bar on the right side, and eating area to the left. There are booths, including a few interesting booths only for two. There are also some free standing tables. The whole look is very 70s. At dinnertime, it gets really crowded, especially at the bar. If you decide to sit at the bar (or stand, if there are no seats), make sure you let your waitress know, so she can find you and seat you when your turn for a table comes up.
Here's the interesting part: there's a grill off to the side of the eating area, and you are supposed to grill your own steaks and skewers!!! Now, I know nothing about cooking. I can't cook to save my life. I tried making pancakes once and they turned out black instead of the norm of creamy yellow. In fact, the first time I went to the grill, I didn't cook my fillet mignon all the way through.
I guess it cuts down on cooks in the kitchen. I guess they just hire waitresses, maybe a server, a washer, and a prep person.
The meat is all seasoned, of course. And it was good! The only complaint I had about the grill was that there was only one spatula and one fork (you know, whatever you call those huge fork thingys they always sell in a barbeque set). So when it got crowded and you wanted to flip over your steak, you couldn't, because someone else was using the utensil. And boy, there were some utensil hogs up there. So you end up improvising and using your own mini-fork.
Also, naturally your clothes begin to smell like barbeque. So even though there were people dressed up nicely, personally I wouldn't wear something extremely nice. Causal works just fine. And if you're on a date, beware - that barbeque smell lingers!
The seasoning, sauces, table settings, and napkins are all close to the grill, on another table. They had the traditional A-1, ketchup, mustard, etc. - a lot of condiments, but no horseradish sauce, which I was surprised! Horseradish sauce works great with steaks!! That was another thing I didn't like.
But the food was quite good and filling. An entree also comes with some bread (which we grilled as well). Their steak and fillet mignon were good, and we also had a side of vegetable skewers (red and green peppers, potatoes, mushrooms), which tasted fresh and were quite good after some grilling.
Or maybe they were good because my friend's a good cook??
TIPS
Parking is a bit difficult to find - best bet is circling around the residential neighborhood.
Dress code is from casual (jeans and a shirt, even flip flops) to semi-dressy (nice pants and shirt, skirt).
BOTTOM LINE
Prices were very decent on everything, including drinks, despite the fact that it's a steakhouse and bar. That's because they got YOU, yes YOU, to take the cook's position. :)
Enjoy!
