| zamtor's Full Review: Tushies the Gel-Free Diaper |
We were given Pampers and Huggies at a baby shower. We didn't like the perfume in them and they leaked all the time. We then tried Seventh Generation and loved them. One day they were out of stock, so we bought these instead.
I have very mixed feelings about these diapers - partly because of their customer service.
First, we threw out almost all of the diapers. When we unfolded the diapers, they ripped. Even with very careful unfolding, they still ripped. The diapers that didn't rip had a stick residue on them. Diapers are not environmentally friendly if they are thrown out before you use them.
I wrote to the company and complained. They contacted me right away and apologized. They said that the machines are old, and sometimes they build up residue and this causes the diapers to be sticky. They offered to send me diapers. A few days later, the CEO called, just to see how things were. I was thrilled. The diapers arrived by UPS shortly afterwards. We asked them to send the diapers in Large because we had a stock of diapers.
A few months later, I got a call from UPS. There was an outstanding bill for taxes and brokerage fees for bringing the diapers into Canada. I was a bit shocked. I assumed that Tushies paid all of the shipping expenses. I called Tushies and they called back and left a message saying that they could not pay the UPS bill. They said I could send the diapers back (a bit too late, the diapers were already used) and they would try to ship the diapers another way. I decided to pay the UPS bill for the 'free' diapers and stop wasting my time because I don't like the diapers that much anyway.
The diapers are okay. They are a bit bulky, but not that bad. They are not super absorbent, but they don't claim to be. This means (at least for us) that we cannot use the diapers at night.
The side tabs are made of clear plastic, which we stuck to my son the first couple of times. I thought that this was a really bad feature of the diapers, but after using them for a couple of times, I got used to it.
It is a fair product. If you are really concerned about using gel diapers, then this seems like an okay alternative. We prefer the softness and absorbency of gel diapers, so these diapers are not a competitive alternative. They are too bulky and not absorbent enough. (The company also makes TenderCare diapers, which are very much like Seventh Generation diapers).
