| vistavoyager1's Full Review: U.S. Map Woodboard Puzzle |
I have given everyone one of my nine grandchildren one of these maps. I think this map is one of the essentials of being educated in U.S. geography. When the grandchildren get to be a certain age about seven, I start teaching them the capitals of the states.
One reason I think this is such a good toy is, that I believe if you learn where the states are located and which states touch above and below that you will remember it for the rest of your life.
When I grew up we were in the midst of fighting World WarII and I think most of the people in my generation became aware of maps and locations because we were forever looking at maps trying to comprehend where our fathers and uncles were stationed or fighting.
The first puzzle of the U.S. I had was cardboard and had pictures of the main products on the states. After the U.S. map I received a map of South American and even today I can place the countries of South American, even though I've never been there. I know it's because of the geography maps I had during childhood.
To be honest I am horrified by how little geography young people know. I work in the travel industry and several young college grads are in my office. I was recently on the telephone with a client and overheard one of the people ask, "Where is Atlantic City, what state?"
I thought I would wait to see who would answer this question. One of the young men said, "I'll go look in the almanac." I couldn't believe my ears. Travel advisors not knowing what state is the home of Atlantic City.
If you give your children this puzzle for Christmas be sure to sit down and help your child learn where the grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins live. Try to associate a person or friend with some of the states.
Keep your children geographically educated. Let's stamp out geographical illiteracy.
