| Freak369's Full Review: Sanford Uni Blazer View Highlighter |
It never fails, when I need a highlighter the first one I grab from the drawer is dried up or on it's way to a slow, squeaky and painful death. The Uni-Blazer from Sanford is built for a long tip life, smooth ink flow and complete control. The tip can be rotated to do thin or thick lines but this isn't a chisel tip and shouldn't be used to cover large areas. I originally picked up the blue and light green Uni-Blazer highlighters but the brood turned their nosey up as such 'girlie' colors. The yellow highlighter in this series is nicer than most in it's class because of the way that the tip is made and the thin barrel. Have you been out shopping for highlighters lately? Most of them are the fat or jumbo sized ones that aren't exactly accommodating to those who only want to highlight one line of text at a time. Considering the price of these when compared to others, you are better off spending the extra twenty cents on the Uni-Blazer line and getting something that is going to last.
Sanford Uni-Blazer View Yellow Highlighter
In a lot of ways this looks like a roller ball pen; the thin barrel is a little misleading and if you have it tossed in a drawer full of pens, it might be hard to spot. The ink window is also misleading because while you get to see the ink, it isn't a true representation of what is actually left in the highlighter. Even though this might be seen as a negative, to me it gives it a little bit of flair. Consider it eye candy for pen junkies. This lacks a rubber comfort grip area at the finger end but that doesn't mean that it is the least bit uncomfortable to use. You have to remember, this isn't a pen so unless you are highlighting pages and pages at a time, this is going to get used for about fifteen seconds then put down. If you are going to highlight large areas, consider using something that is a little thicker and more apt to get the job done correctly.
As far as Sanford claim that the ink doesn't fade over time; I have some issues with that. Sure, maybe they were talking about in textbooks or notebooks but when I left a piece of paper on the desk for a few weeks after highlighting a couple of sentences, it didn't have that nice sharp yellow color to it. I wont go so far as to say that this is neon yellow because it isn't but it is loud enough to make anything on white paper stand out and be noticed. It's well made and has a strong sturdy barrel to it; likewise the pocket clip is made so that it won't crack or break off even if you use it a lot. Someone at the shop loves to sit there and flick the pocket clip on pens and highlighters until they break, so far this is the only one that hasn't suffer a most horrible fate at the hands of 'the clicker'. One thing that really annoys me about highlighters is the "squeak factor"; that spine shivering noise that comes from a highlighter when the tip is slid across slick pieces of paper. You'll have none of that from the Uni-Blazer so if you don't want to have everyone in class turning around looking at you and giving you the evil eye, spend a couple of extra cents and get one of these.
So you want to know how much these cost huh? Well, they aren't cheap but they don't cost as much as some of the top of the line ones either. You can get these are larger office supply stores for about $1.49 for a single serving. If you want to save money, get the twin packs [same color] for $2.19. So far I haven't seen these sold in a set or with two different colors in the twin pack but you never know what curve ball Sanford is going to throw at you. Most highlighters cost about $1.19 to $1.39 each so these are a little more but in my opinion they are worth it. If yellow isnt your color you can also get these in green, blue, something that sort of looks like red, orange and purple. If you like to shop on line, MisterArt.com has the absolute lowest price on these, an amazing $1.27 each.
The Bottom Line
Even though there are a few cons to this highlighter, the pros greatly outnumber it. If you are worried about colors bleeding or ink getting sucked up into the tip of the highlighter you can rest easy knowing that this is something that isn't going to ruin things that you may have already highlighted in other colors. It is easy to use, recaps perfectly and because of the design of the tip and ink chamber, leaks are almost impossible. Now, if you leave it uncapped and it comes in contact with something the ink will spread so make sure you put the cap back on when you're done! Yes, these do cost a little more than other highlighters but to me they are worth it. The average life for one with the brood is about three months but that's three solid months of use. The ones at the shop do last longer but mysteriously, several of them have come up missing when I went to reach for them in the drawer.
As always, thanks for the visit
