I suggest Chimay blue. There are a lot of trappist ale pretenders made on the West side of the Atlantic, the best of which I thought was Ommegang made in Cooperstown NY.
It is quite potent, yes, you don't want to drive anytime soon after consuming even small amounts. It's as strong as wine but if consumed like beer will really get you smashed in no time!
I like this beer, but unibroue is not one of the best offerings. It's OK and makes me perk, especially compared to crappy stuff like Budweiser but I would rather fork over an extra dollar or two for Chimay Blue. You're right that the finish may leave something to be desired, it just doesn't have that frothy, fruity smoothness as the stuff from Belgium offers.
