mind-full's Full Review: Vlasic Polish Dill Spears 24 Floz
Vlasic Polish Dill Spears beat the spiciness out of the Kosher dill variety, hands down -- just try one.
Polish dill pickles probably catch a lot of flack, you know, being Polish and all. They're segregated on store shelves, often near the bottom if you can find them at all while the Kosher dills, the bread and butter and all the varieties of pickled peppers stand in plain view.
That's fine for me. I know where to look and I'll take them all.
A Dill Pickle Is Never Just a Dill Pickle
I've always chosen dill pickles over all others, and Polish dills sit at the top of the pickle pyramid in my taste preferences. They give all the flavor of dill with a little extra kick -- some peppery, garlicky spice that knocks Kosher dills flat in comparison. I find the Kosher dills taste almost watery next to the Polish pickles.
Those who are not fanataics for a little more oomph from the pickle spear on the sandwich platter may not care a lick about whether they have a Polish or a Kosher pickle. I care a lot. I like the extra spice and usually, I find the Polish pickles have a better crunch, but maybe I'm just partial.
Nutritional Information
As with all pickles, give or take a milligram or so, there's little nutritional value in the entire jar. The spices probably offer the most, if you actually ate the leavings at the bottom of the jar that work to flavor the brine and pickles.
For as good as they are, and even though they have "seeds" and a crunchy goodness, pickles have no vitamins or protein or even fiber. Ho hum! There's a green "vegetable" that doesn't count for anything but flavor.
Lots of sodium in there, of course, and anyone on a cardiac diet will learn they aren't to belly up to the pickle jar often or at all, depending.
So, enjoy as always, in moderation!
Polish or Kosher?
I won't turn down dill pickles of either variety, but given the choice, I buy Polish dills every time and stock up on them when I find a good price. I'm the kind of person who could purchase a gallon jar of pickles and have it drained in only a few weeks' time. I'm fond of pickles, and no, I'm not pregnant.
Go Vlasic and go for the Polish label. You'll taste a big difference and if you're like me, you'll keep going back for more.
