tcervo's Full Review: Waring JEX328 400 Watts Juicer
I bought this juicer in July 2004 (just over 3 months ago). I've used it every morning since I got it.
It's a nice looking brushed aluminum and black machine, that comes apart for easy cleaning. From beginning to end (washing my fruits and vegetables, making the juice, to cleaning the juicer), I'm done in 15 minutes. Most veggies (carrots, celery, etc.) do not require any cutting. Just put them in, and use the plunger. Larger fruits, such as apples, will need to be cut up in order to fit through the opening. I usually quarter most apples and then they are fine. The collection container is big enough to make a couple small glasses of juice before you'll want to empty it. Fine for 2 people in the morning. The juicer itself is nice and heavy, giving it a solid feel. It's about the size of a food processor (as far as space on the counter goes.) Aside from the juicer itself, it comes with a cleaning brush for the cutting screen and a metal collection cup with marks on the side so you know how much juice you have.
The juice is delicious, and I'm able to save the residual skin/pulp for use in the garden (or if I'm just doing vegetables, it makes a good base for stock.) The pulp is moderately dry, but I guess it's all subjective. If I'm using apples, it tends to be wetter. The amount of juice isn't much, but it's not supposed to be. I usually use 1 carrot, 1 celery stalk, 1 small apple (fuji), a small bit of Italian parsley, and some peeled ginger. That'll get me between 8-12 oz, depending on the size of the veggies.
Now for the down sides...For one thing, it's loud. It sounds like an airplane taking off. The sound doesn't really bother me, but I'm not so sure about my neighbors, who don't get up as early as me.
My other, more serious, complaint is durability. Just this morning, the juicer broke. There's a "safety interlock feature" that keeps the juicer from running if the top reservoir and lid aren't locked into place. On the reservoir, there's a small plastic piece covering a plastic arm with a small spring. You'll probably never even notice this (I didn't), unless is breaks off and 3 pieces fall out onto your counter (like mine did this morning.) Now I have to take it to a service center. Who knows how long I'll be without it?
UPDATE: I got word from the service center. Since I didn't send in the warranty card, they have to charge me for a new reservoir. It's going to be $30. This is unacceptable. I, for one, NEVER send in warranty cards, as they're nothing more than a way to collect information for junk mail. The Waring card, in particular: it's full of questions about household income, hobbies, etc. Stuff that has NOTHING to do with registering my product. I've never had a problem before getting warranty work done. Most companies can look up the serial number to see when the item was manufactured, thus telling if it's still under warranty. Waring won't do this, however. They require it to be registered, OR, the original sales receipt. Who saves receipts for everything they buy? If I spend the $30, this becomes a $120 juicer in only 3 months. Because of that, I'm going to adjust my overall rating.
I believe a juicer should stand up to daily use. After all, isn't that why you buy a juicer in the first place? Once a day use shouldn't cause pieces of the juicer to break off. Looking more closely at the pieces that make up the safety interlock feature, it seems like a poor design to me. It's no wonder it broke.
If you plan to use this juicer only occasionally, this would probably work for you. If you plan to use it daily, though, you might want to look for something sturdier.
