Javelina's Full Review: Washable Nursing Pads - 6 ct
I try to use as many natural products as possible, and so I was pleasantly surprised to see these nursing pads at Babies R Us. I am impressed that they are adding numerous natural products to their store, including these pads, which are organic cotton. With my first baby, I used all disposable pads, and although I had heard mixed reviews on cloth nursing pads, I wanted to at least give them a try.
TL Care Natural Washable Nursing Pads
I got a package of 6 cloth nursing pads for about $6.99. The pads are a sort of light beige color, are round in shape, and cotton throughout. I found these surprisingly at Babies R Us, and I can't say I have seen washable nursing pads in any stores (only online). I also had not heard of this brand before.
My Thoughts
I washed these pads before first use, since a lot of fabrics aren't particiularly absorbent before they have been washed. These pads are easy to wash - just toss them in the washer with everything else. If you are worried about them getting stuck in other things or the washer, you can toss them in a lingerie bag first.
I air-dry these, just because we try not to use the dryer, plus generally we either dry things outdoors in the sun or inside in the dry winter without any problems.
These nursing pads are simple to use, and just like any other nursing pad. There is no "front" vs. "back", as the pads do not have any kind of backing to them. It should really be noted that these do not have a waterproof side to them, so if that is an issue for you, don't buy them!
These pads are really soft, and although I have only used them for a month, they have stayed soft and I have not had any issues with the fabric. They are incredibly soft and comfortable, and much more comfortable and natural feeling when compared to disposable pads that have some sort of artificial aspect to it (plasticy layer). These are also seamless, and the only stitching is around the outer edge, but it is not something I can feel on my skin.
The pads are perfectly flat, but they do contour to my skin well. I would not wear them out of the house for two reasons: - they do not have a waterproof outer layer, so it doesn't give me the peace of mind that I wouldn't have an accident. - they aren't particularly bulky, but some of my disposable pads (like Lansinoh) are a little more discreet. On the flip side, these cotton pads don't have that "crunchy" feel that disposables have.
Perhaps if you rarely leak or barely leak, you might feel comfortable wearing these out of the house, but I can't say I do. Also, I have worn them at night when my newborn has slept longer stretches, and then I experience let down and the pads get soaked through.
Overall
These nursing pads are a fantastic idea - they are eco-friendly, reusable, and doesn't involve any chemicals. Plus, it can be healthier to use instead of disposables, for example since the cotton is breathable.
However, there are downsides. If you leak a lot, these probably won't prevent accidents. And, you may not want to wear these out in public since there is no waterproof backing, and therefore no definite protection. Plus, these may be bulky depending on your bra or clothing.
But, it is nice to have this set as my production regulates and I have to worry less about leaks, plus I can usually use these during the day at home without a problem. I will, however, keep an eye out for cloth pads that have a waterproof side.
