Pros: Great program, great instructors, motivational, interesting meetings, nice support group
Cons: If you're in a cost cutting situation, $500 - $700 per year might be difficult
The Bottom Line: I recommend this program highly because I never would have lost the 50 lbs. without the instructors' help and the support group

About two years ago, I saw a few pictures of myself and couldn't believe how heavy I looked. When I went for a physical, my doctor told me of the health benefits of joining Weight Watchers. I figured that I would give it a try.
The first week I attended the meeting but really didn't like the instructor all that much. I thought to myself "this will never work - I hate it." But I figured that I'll give it another week.
The second week I went on a different night and had an instructor named Judy. She really cared about her people and was very friendly. Now I found that the meetings were fun and Judy was a good motivator. I now began changing my eating habits immediately and got my 5 lbs. off bookmark award very quickly. The applause and nice things said about me was a good feeling. I was on my way.
Judy accepted that I chose a "portion control and exercise" program rather than the usual flex or core programs. It worked well for me.
Week after week I was making great progress and my shirt sizes and pants sizes eventually were getting smaller. I used to buy 3X shirts from the Big & Tall Shop but eventually, after about 50 weeks, never stepped into that store again. I could now go to the mall to buy my clothes.
I must give all the credit to Judy for her motivation and fabulous meetings on Wednesday nights. When I couldn't make that meeting, I went to Herm's meeting on Saturday mornings. Herm is a super guy and also does a great meeting. Herm and Judy are married, by the way. Two nicer people you'll never find.
Anyway, I recently stopped going to Weight Watchers - I lost 54 lbs. in 92 weeks when I stopped. I am very happy with my results. I stopped because I am in a "cost cutting" situation right now and at $133 every twelve weeks or $13 every week we are talking between $500 & $700 a year. I hope that I have learned enough from Judy and Herm that I can continue on my own to keep the weight down.
I'm not ruling out a return to Weight Watchers some day. The support I got from some truly great people, the pats on the back, the stars on the ribbon (one star for every 5 pounds you lose), and the great atmosphere will be missed. I am exercising on my treadmill just about everyday and checking my weight on about 5 scales in my area (such as when I walk into supermarkets). This will have to do for a while.
Checking back on my records, however, I had once been as high as 65 lbs. off and in the last 12 months I actually gained 8 lbs. So you may reach a point where it becomes hard to keep it off. Don't get discouraged though. Everyone has a couple of bad weeks. I gained a lot of pounds back after Hurricane Wilma hit and I was without electricity for about 2 weeks. I kind of got back into bad habits like eating peanut butter sandwiches for those two weeks, because I couldn't cook up those chicken breasts that I liked so much. Also, my treadmill wasn't working for that time.
Anyway, in summary, Weight Watchers is a great program which I recommend to everyone. Getting on that scale every week kind of motivates you to try your best. The pounds seem to come off much quicker in the beginning. I lost most of my 50 lbs. in the first year. After that I kind of stabilized. Make sure that you find an instructor that you like - it makes all the difference in the world!!!
