jvolzer's Full Review: Whirlpool Cooktop Care Kit #31605
Last year we purchased a new range and went with a glass-top for the first time. We thought that they were supposed to be EASIER to keep clean than a range with coil-burners. Hey, there'd be no where for the food to hide and we should b eable to just take a damp cloth and give it a quick wipe to clean, right? WRONG! Every little drop of something seemed to burn on. Wiping with a wet cloth, as we'd do with our old range, would usually leave a streaky mess. We quickly found that a lot more scrubbing was involved. It seems that almost every little dot of anything requires that cooktop cleaner and one of the little scrubby pads be used, with worse spills sometimes requiring a straight razor blade for removal. Ours is probablyworse because of the light color (bisque).
The most frustrating part though was that we often had black marks on the surface just from the bottom of a clean pot or skillet. At first we though maybe the bottoms of our pots were dirty, but it kept happening even after a thorough cleaning of the cookware.
It wasn't long before we decided to try the Whirlpool Cooktop Care Kit. The kit comes comes with a bottle of cooktop cleaner and some cleaning pads and a bottle of cooktop protectant and an applicator.
The cleaner and pads seem to perform on-par with the sample bottle of Cerama Bryte that we received with the range. A drop or two on the mess is rubbed in with one of the included cleaning pads.
But the item that makes the biggest difference is the protectant. After cleaning the cooktop you apply some of the protectant to the applicator and spread it across the surface, then wipe until clean. The appliator is a thin liquid that ends up forming a thin film to the surface, almost like wax on a car. Not only do we no longer get the black marks from cookware, but the spills don't stick as much and when they do, they are much easier to clean off. The surface still needs cleaned after every meal, but it's easier and faster. The protectant only needs to be applied once every couple of weeks. Once things seem to be leaving more marks or getting harder to remove, we just put another coat of protectant on. It tends to wipe into the surface easier if we use a soft microfiber cloth to buff it in after spreading smoothly with the applicator.
In the end, it's still more work to keep the glass-top range as clean as we had kept our traditional top stove, but using the protectant from this kit (also sold as a separate item) has made a huge difference, and we no longer hate the new range.
We've been using the products for months and both bottles are still almost full, so they'll definitely last a LONG time.
I'm giving this product five stars, which is rare for me to give ANY product, as it seems there's always some room for improvement. But this product does exactly what it's supposed to do and has a fair price.
