| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton 5-Point Star Perimeter Cookie Cutter 2303-1... |
The past few days Ive been baking up a storm and the cookie cutters have all seen a lot of use but out of all of them, this five point star is the one thats been working overtime. The boys have been helping out with mixing the dough, rolling it out and pressing out the shapes and since this is their favorite, we have a veritable bounty of colorful stars waiting to be made into cookie trays, for the cookie swap and to go to the various shelters in the area. Next to the starburst [eight point Wilton 509-271] star cutter, this is the easiest to decorate and has the best shape after baking. If you are looking for a cutter that kids can use, delivers a shape that retains its size after baking and cleans up easily, look no further than the Wilton Star Perimeter Cutter.
Wilton Star Perimeter Cookie Cutter 2303-135
When it comes to cookies especially holiday cookies I get picky about the cutters that I use. It makes sense to purchase something thats easy to use but at the same time you want something that is going to last. This cutter is one of the best plain star shapes Ive come across for making iced sugar cookies it gives you a finished product that is easy to decorate, is a breeze to work with and allows the kids to join in on the fun. This five point star is basic but a staple for holiday baking and the size about three inches wide by about three and three quarter inches high means you can fit about 15 of them on a standard cookie sheet without having to worry about the edges spreading or sticking to each other if you use a moist dough that tends to run a little.
As much as I love this cutter and rave about it, the center bar does get on my nerves. This might be a godsend for kids to get the cutter out of the dough but it hinders popping the dough out of the cutter if it sticks. I would rather have a cutter with an open center than one with the bar but I just write the review, not design the cutters. Even with this minor design flaw, I still consider this a great cutter for the holidays, special events or when you just want to spruce up plain sugar cookies. The bottom edges of the cutter arent beveled so you will need to press this cutter into the dough and wiggle it around a little so it will pierce the dough completely and give you a sharp cut. This works on almost every type of dough however mixes that have nuts, chocolate chips or other hard pieces might need a little force to cut through it. Check the bottom part of the cutter when you are done to see if any of the points or edges are bent if they are you might as well toss it in the trash since its almost impossible to straighten out a piece thats been bent.
Decorating
Since the finished product has only a minimal amount of detail [the five points], this makes it a perfect cookie to decorate with royal icing, sprinkles, miniature M&Ms or even food safe markers. Regardless of your level of cookie or cake decorating, working with cookies that were created with this cutter is a painless process. If you can mix water, meringue powder and powdered sugar you can ice these cookies like a pro! But thats just the start once you ice them you can add things to the wet icing before it starts to harden smashed up hard candies, sprinkles, crushed cookies whatever your heart desires! This is a great activity for kids and allows them to make very cool, hand crafted gifts for friends, teachers or even bothers and sisters.
Things To Know
• Wilton offers a variety of star shaped cookie cutters however if you need one that has a wider top to it so it is easier to grip and remove from the dough, I suggest checking out the Star Comfort Grip Cutter [2310-605], This costs a bit more but if you are planning on making hundreds of cookies youll be glad you spend the extra money.
• If you are having trouble finding Wilton cookie cutters, most of them can be found in their online store. You can usually find these cutters at places like Wal-Mart, Target and K-Mart but Michaels is also a great place to check. Make sure you are purchasing an official Wilton cutter by looking for the Wilton signature name on the body of the cutter.
The Bottom Line
For less than a buck you can pick up this cool cutter something that can be used for the holidays, to make star shaped sandwiches, adding a little glitz to you brownies or even to make Jell-O gigglers. These cutters usually last me one season however if you dont bake on a mega scale, chances are yours will last you a lot longer. These are usually priced at about .50 cents but deals can be had on them if you pick them up after the holidays. Its rare to find these outside the holiday season so stock on them while you can!
As always, thanks for the read!
