Sparkles, sparkles, sparkles
My eight-year-old daughter loves things that sparkles. For instance, she loves to wear her sparkly body glitter. She loves to use her Elmers Shimmer N Shine washable art glaze when making an art project. So, when I came across the Wilton Cake Sparkles one morning while lurking around my favorite Michaels Craft Store, I just knew that I would have to get some!
~ Colors, colors, colors! What colors do they come in? ~
While the above link would appear to be for Wilton Cake Sparkles #7031272 in the color red, it is not. First, the #7031272 would actually be for the Yellow Wilton Cake Sparkles according to the ever fun Wilton On-Line Shop available at www.wilton.com. Secondly, I have spoken with one of the Category Leads for Home & Garden and she has said that this link should be for Wilton Cake Sparkles in general. So, I am basing this review on the colors of the rainbow. Or, should I just say the bright and fun colors that Wilton has provided for us to let our creative juices flow?
Now that I have straightened that up, I bet that you are curious just as to how many Wilton Cake Sparkles colors are available. Well, according to my frequent visits to the Wilton On-Line Shop and my trips to Michaels Craft Store, the following are the colors that I have seen:
White #703-1290
Yellow #703-1272
Red #703-1284
Orange #703-1308
Pink #703-1260
Green #703-1278
Light Blue #703-1262
Purple #703-1266
Blue #703-1314
Black #703-1302
~ So, how do these sparkles really taste? ~
Im sure that there are some wondering why one would even consider putting sparkles on their cake. Because its fun, thats why! Dont worry, the Wilton Cake Sparkles are edible. I can assure you that when then are placed on a cake, cupcake or even a sugar cookie, you cant taste anything other than the sweet item you are eating. Now, for reviewing purposes, I did just flick a few on my finger to take a taste. There is just a small after taste (A very blah taste.) and the texture made me feel like I was eating a very small piece of paper. Keep these sparkles on your cake and one will never be able to taste anything but the cake and frosting. Trust me, I have tested this out on several occasions with some of the toughest taste critics around. Children
~ A few statistics please! ~
The Wilton Cake Sparkles come in a .25 oz bottle. These bottles, with their white caps on, measure up to about 2 ¼ inches in height. So, as you can see, they will not take up more space in your kitchen cupboard. If need be, you could even place one on top of the other because it has a flat top if you are short in storage space.
Each bottle of Wilton Cake Sparkles is made of clear plastic. This makes it so easy for me to identify which bottle of Cake Sparkles I want to use when searching through my Wilton products. (Yes, sadly enough
I have a shelf strictly for this type of stuff!) As I mentioned above, each bottle has a white plastic cap on it. When using for the first time, you will need to remove the protective insert so that you can shake out your desired amount of sprinkles onto your cake, cookies, etc. This lid does have a lift up lid that opens to an approximately ¾ opening and has 5 round holes for the sparkles to be shaken through. I have found through multiple uses that this opening works extremely well. I have never had a clogging problem. If one does, I would think that it would be very easy to fix by washing it with warm soapy water.
While I have added the Wilton Cake Sparkles to my cakes and cupcakes just for their sparkly appearance, Wilton does offer further suggestions on the back of each package of their cake sparkles. For example, Try them with cake stencils for instant shimmering beauty. I can tell you that this is definitely something that I look forward to trying.
One important thing to remember, that is also listed on the back of the packaging by Wilton is For best results, sprinkle on iced cakes, cupcakes or cookies before icing sets. This is a true statement. When we used the Wilton Cake Sparkles during the Holidays my daughter and niece were decorating Christmas cookies. In their mad rush to see who could decorate the most cookies the quickest, they were waiting to sprinkle on these sparkles until they had quite a few cookies already iced. While some of the sparkles did stay on, we did notice a big difference when they slowed down the competition a bit and sprinkled on the sparkles after each cookie was completely iced.
~ Try it! They are fun! ~
When I first discovered the Wilton Cake Sparkles it was right before I was making a cake for my daughters End of the Year party at school last year. It was going to be in an American theme and I had said that I would make an American Flag cake. I was thrilled when I found these cake sparkles because I knew that they would give my cake a nice shine to it. I used the red, white and blue (Three separate bottles) of Wilton Cake Sparkles. Let me tell you, not only where the Moms and teachers impressed with my cake, but so were the kids!
As I mentioned, I have these sparkles when decorating Christmas cookies. I have also used them just to make ordinary cupcakes shine. And, just this past weekend I used the Wilton Pink Cake Sparkles to add an extra sheen to my daughters birthday cake. Now, at the Wilton On-Line Shop it mentions that you can put them on ice cream as well. We havent tried that option yet. And, quite honestly, Im not sure if we will. We seem perfectly happy with our hot fudge sauce.
As you have probably already guessed, I have been quite pleased with the performance of theses Wilton Cake Sparkles. These sparkles (Which are quite small in size.) have added a very nice sheen to my cakes, cupcakes and cookies. They are also bright in color. More importantly, my daughter thinks that they are really cool and loves having an extra decorating item to use when helping me out in the kitchen. At $2.89 a bottle, (Even less when using a Michaels coupon.) I find it to be a great value. I still have over ¼ of a bottle of pink sparkles from this weekends birthday cake decorating. Dont worry, they wont go to waste. My daughter is eagerly awaiting the next pan of cupcakes to decorate all by herself!
