| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Christmas Mix Sprinkles 710-734 |
With Christmas right around the corner, Im knee deep in cookie dough, cupcake liners, sprinkles and frosting. Some people might complain about having to bake for the holidays but for me its sort of like therapy. Everyone stays out of the kitchen, I get to play around with new recipes and when it comes time for the taste test I can always count on the boys to give me some honest feedback. This year Im working on basic butter cookies for a local homeless shelter, even though the recipe is simple and easy to make I like to add as much variety as I can to them and these sprinkles were the perfect pick for the job. So far the boys and I have made about ten dozen cookies, half of the goal we set when we started. The container is running on empty but being the compulsive shopper that I am, there are a few more of these tucked away in the cabinet. They are having a ball helping out with the decorating and thanks to Wiltons ingenious design and plastic container I have one less potential accident to worry about.
Regardless of your baking skills, this is a no-brainer type of product. Even if you use the premade cookie dough thats sold at grocery stores, you can jazz them up a little with these sprinkles. For those that arent heavy bakers, this saves some cash since you are purchasing one item that contains six different designs and its a real space saver too! Wilton makes the four and six chamber dispensers for almost every season and has recently introduced the kids line including Harry Potter, Scooby-Doo and Power Puff Girls. If you are looking for an all in one type product, you might want to check out Wiltons Holiday Cookie Cutter and Sprinkle Set [2109-1807] or the Ice-A-Cookie sets in green [710-333], white [710-335] or red [710-334].
The Assortment
Each of the six chambers of the Wilton Christmas Mix holds 1.3 ounces of assorted sprinkles. If you hadnt guessed it from the name, these are all Christmas themed toppings. The two basics are red and green colored sugar sprinkles. These are usually the first ones to go when I start the holiday baking so I make sure that I stock up on the individual containers when they are reduced after the holidays. The Christmas tree mix is a blend of small green trees and red and white covered chocolate jimmies. These are usually best on top of iced cupcakes that are still fresh [not set] since the trees need something to cling to. The Christmas nonpareils are just your basic small green, red and white balls that will stick to almost any type of moist surface. Again, getting these to stick and stay stuck require you to get them on the baked good as soon after applying the icing as possible. The Christmas jimmie assortment is just like the nonpareils [red, green and white] except they are jimmies [the long thin ones]. The one I like the least is the gingerbread boy mix, for some reason I just never seem to have a use for these. The small brown gingerbread men are mixed in with white, red and green jimmies.
Wilton Sprinkles
For some reason, sprinkles right out of the container dont seem to have the same taste that they had when I was a kid. For the most part, these taste great when sprinkled over frosted sugar cookies, cupcakes, small individual frosted cakes and Christmas cookies. The red and green sugars can be placed on the cookies before or after the dough has been baked but the other assortments should be left for after the baking process to ensure that they retain their color and shape. There are individual little flap tops for each section so you dont have to worry about different sprinkles falling out when you are decorating your baked goods. I do suggest giving the container a tap on the counter when switching sprinkles to knock loose any that might be hiding or stuck between the sections.
Things To Know
This product shouldnt be confused with the Wilton Christmas Sprinkle Mix that contains four chambers and assortments instead of this product that has six toppings. The four count is product number 710-729 [$4.99] and the six count [this one] is 710-734 [$5.99]. There is only a difference of about a dollar between the two containers and the four count is a bit smaller than the six count but you get different toppings. The smaller four count container is a bit hard for me to find and I didnt have any luck finding it locally last year. Both of these are currently available at the Wilton Online Store if you have any trouble finding them locally at places like Michaels, Target or Wal-Mart.
When you are done with the container you dont have to toss it out! You can refill it with containers of sprinkles or toppings, use it for small safety pins, beads or my personal favorite spices that I purchase at Henrys that dont come in containers [cinnamon especially]. Since the openings of the container sections are small you might want to think twice about putting some items in it. My boys had the bright idea to put small Lego pieces in it so they could find them easily. Well, they could find them but getting the out of the container was a different story. They shook that poor little container so much that it had to mysteriously disappear it was either that or Id have to invest in large quantities of Aleve.
The Bottom Line
These are a great way to make the most of your holiday baking. Instead of making full batches of cookies, you can divide them up and use the different sprinkles and toppings on them frosted or unfrosted. This gives you a lot of colors to work with and makes for festive take away trays or gift bundles. The sprinkles are easy to use, are certified kosher and retain their color and shape. The plastic container makes it safe for kids to use so make sure you let them join in the holiday baking fun! For those compulsive shoppers, keep your eyes peels for plummeting prices a week or so before Christmas. Places like Target and Wal-Mart often reduce the Wilton product anywhere from 20 40% but if you really want a bargain, wait until the 26th rolls around when everything is at least 50% off and stock up for next year!
As always, thanks for the read!
