| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Fright Night Lollipop Mold 2115-1726 |
I guess it comes as no surprise that Im reviewing another Halloween product, a Wilton Halloween product to be exact. As I have mentioned in other reviews, we go batty for this time of year and with the brood getting older, they are able to help out with decorations and in the kitchen. They arent the craftiest kids on the planet but they do try so I figured Id see if theyd be interested in helping out with the Halloween lollipops. Since this is an open treat, I dont hand these out to the trick-or-treaters that come knocking. Chances are the parents that do inspect their cache of candy will toss them in the trash since they arent factory sealed. These are reserved for the older kids that still enjoy Halloween but are a little too old to go door to door. I also make these for our Halloween parties and things to add to the candy swap we have a few days before the 31st.
Wilton Fright Night Lollipop Mold 2115-1726
There are nine different shapes to this mold so you can have a ton of variety when you are making these. My favorites have to be the spooky skeleton head, bat and vampire but the ghost and tombstone are pretty darn cute too. There are two different pumpkins one scary and one cute along with a small haunted house and witch. Each of them have a good bit of detail to them but look good if done in single or multi color designs. How you choose to decorate them is up to you and it all depends on how much time you want to invest in them. Even with a little detail like a few dots for eyes or a solid color for the image and another color for a background these still look great when they are completed. The complete list of images
flying ghost, vampire, haunted house, R.I.P tombstone, witch, skeleton head, flying bat and two pumpkins.
When compared to other Wilton Halloween candy and lollipop molds, this one gets high marks for detail and the fact that you get nine different shapes. So far this has put up with a lot of use and is still in great shape. If you are into making candy or suckers, this is a great mold to pick up for the Halloween season. The semi hard plastic will take a beating but I suggest that handle these with a little care since they will crack if heavily abused. So far this one is proving to be a real trooper and is one of my favorites for the spooky season.
Instructions
You will want to make sure your mold is clean and dry before your start. Youll have to figure out which colors will be used for each of the sections and work from the bottom up if you plan on doing multiple colors. I suggest working with small amounts of colored chocolate and either painting in the details or applying them with toothpicks. You can lift up the mold and check out your progress and see if there are any spots that need a touch up. Since there is a lot of detail to the pieces, if you want to skip a lot of steps you could just do a quick pour with one color, press in the lollipop stick and allow it set up. Set times will vary depending on how hot your kitchen is, if you did multiple layers and the type of chocolate you are using. After the chocolate has time to set and harden, all you need to do is slide them into a plastic baggie to keep them from getting damaged or my personal favorite, slide a small bag over the top, tie off the bottom with ribbon and press the bottom of the stick into a styrofoam base a round one sliced in half works perfectly. This way guests can pick out the one they like and you have less of a chance of them getting banged up or broken.
Clean up is simple but requires a little bit of time to get into all the crevices. You will want to make sure that you have these squeaky clean before you store them away, nothing worse than breaking out the Halloween stuff to find gunk stuck to them or worse attracting ants for a free buffet. I use a toothbrush to get into all the detailed spots then give it the one over with a soapy sponge then air dry. If you are a real stickler for organization, you can purchase a dish storage container and slide these into the slots so they are protected until next year.
Things To Know
Youll want to make sure that you are working with a clean mold that is dry and free of any lint or dust. It also helps to give them the once over if you purchased these the year before so you can check for cracks, dents or any wear that could effect the shape of the mold. If you do notice dents most of the time they can be popped out using the end of one of the lollipop sticks or a Q-Tip. If you do have a crack in one of them, you might be able to do a quick fix with scotch tape on the outside of the mold or apply a thin coat of chocolate to seal it. Since there are nine different shapes on this mold, if one or two of them get damaged, the rest can still be used so it isnt a total wash out.
This is a great project for kids since you can use melted chocolate that is cooled off but has not yet started to set up and get hard. There are several Wilton candy making and lollipop making kits on the market that come with everything you need to make an assortment of creepy but tasty treats. Tossing a few of these molds into the mix will give them a little more creative freedom and allow them to make their own unique creations. The boys help out with cookies and cupcakes but until this year they were never interested in making candy or lollipops that all changed when they realized that theyd get to sample the goods. They have used this mold several times over the past few weeks and get a real kick out of seeing a pile of colored chocolate discs turn into a yummy chocolate lollipop.
The Bottom Line
I am a real believer in Wilton products especially their Halloween items. Its one of my favorite times of the year and I do go all out with the decorations and treats. This is a great mold to have on hand even if you dont want to make lollipops from it. You can easily make chocolate treats as long as you dont fill the sections to the brim you wont have to worry about chocolate leaking out. This is a great value too, you get nine different shapes on one mold. Priced anywhere from $1.79 - $2.49, this is an inexpensive way to get the most of your candy making time and yield the best results.
Wishing you & yours a safe Halloween
