| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Standard Halloween Baking Cups, Pack of 50 |
Halloween is one of my all time favorite holidays; whether I am in the kitchen baking or out on the front lawn decorating, chances are I will be sporting a smile ... or an evil grin. With the boys getting older I want to try to squeeze as much fun into the holiday as possible; long gone are the days of trick or treating [except Annabelle, I dont think shell ever give that up] but they still get a major kick out of scaring people. These baking cups arent all that spooky but thats fine with me, sometimes you have to take the cute route with things to try and balance out the bloody eyeballs, creepy skeletons and spiderwebs. I was really disappointed when I found out that Wilton discontinued these; they dont have a lot of dark colored baking cups for Halloween to start with and then they have to go and kill these off. Most of the ones that they have in stock now are cute and whimsical .. and lighter in color. Theres nothing wrong with that but if I am going to go all out for Halloween then I want some real color variety to work with. Even though they stopped making these, chances are they will surface at close out stores like Big Lots and at Wal-Mart ... they are notorious for finding pallets of overstocked items that were forgotten about or misplaced from a previous season.
Halloween Standard Baking Cups 415-213
At first glance you dont pick up on all the detail that these baking cups have; black dominates it but if you take a closer look you will see a cute witch stirring up her potion in a cauldron but thats not all. There are flying ghosts with cute grins, pumpkins and purple swirls but what would a Halloween cupcake liner be without bats? The ones on this design have a very close resemblance to the ones that would eventually get their own series ... the Just Batty line from Wilton. The design is really nice and will work well with any other dark cupcake liner that you are using; you will need to bake these inside a muffin or cupcake pan. There are some baking cups that have a thin metal disposable cup that they get baked in ... these are not them. Even though they are thin they are pretty strong and wont show a lot of stain marks from ingredients [oil, shortening, butter, eggs etc], So you might be saying, Well, Freak, no duh it wont show any stain marks, they are black! Believe it or not, the darker ones will show just as much as the lighter ones. These wont fall apart or rip to pieces when you are removing them from cupcakes or muffins ... that would have probably been a better statement to make.
These come packaged in a plastic sleeve so you will want to take them out of that and store them inside something else. This will keep them from getting smashed up or exposed to humidity, that can make them a little hard to separate when you are lining the pans. You get fifty in each pack so theres enough to make a ton of treats but if you want to really knock their socks off, invest in a lot of different styles and designs. You can use these for more than baking; if you want to serve up treats like candy corn or home make chocolates, grab your trusty cupcake pan and line them with these, pour in the candy or treats and toss it on the table. Now, if you really want to go all out, mix equal amounts of nuts, raisins, mini marshmallows and peanut butter chips [the ones used for baking] into a large bowl. Spoon two tablespoons of this into each of the cups [make sure you have them inside a baking pan], you want the mix to be loose and in a cone shape if possible. Melt chocolate in the microwave or in a double boiler on the stove and slowly drizzle the melted chocolate over the mix. You can add smashed up pieces of pretzels, cereal or what ever you have on hand - the more you add to it the stranger the taste of it. For an extra kick, use orange or red chocolate. The baking cups make clean up easy, just throw them away and you are done.
These usually sell for anywhere from .99 cents to $1.49 depending on where and when you are shopping. The closer you get to Halloween the lower the price gets but you run the risk of them running out of them so dont wait too long to stock up on them. After holiday sales are a great time to buy these, most places like Jo-Annes, Michaels and Target have them for .50 cents. Since this is a seasonal item it wouldnt be all that practical to use them at other times of the year; likewise, these are super hard to find outside of the months of September and October. Wilton did discontinue this design but you can still find this one online at places that stock Halloween party goods as well as at sites like eBay but you may have to purchase them in lots of five or ten packages.
The Bottom Line
I really hate it when Wilton kills off a design, especially when it is as cute as this one. Even so, it made way for new lines like Just Batty and the new cookie cutters. Chances are you will be able to get these at places like Big Lots or clearance stores that specialize in items that are discontinued. I stocked up on them last year when there were tons of them left over after Halloween so Im not all that worried about running out of them. When ever Wilton kills off one design, they usually replace it with one or two new things. These are just as nice to work with as the other Wilton baking cups and the design was very unique; the purple, white and hint of yellow made it easy to use them in combination with others from Wilton. If you come across these during a sidewalk sale at Michaels or an overstock rush [sale] at Jo-Annes dont hesitate getting them!
As always, thanks for the read!
