It should be no surprise that, with the push toward more "natural" cleaners in recent years, companies that previously sold glass cleaners are looking down this path. While not doing away with their vast types of glass cleaners on the market, Windex did formulate and release a "Natural" glass cleaner to compete with the likes of Seventh Generation and GreenWorks - specifically their Windex Nature's Source Natural Glass & Surface Cleaner. This product is used in home cleaning, and not janitorial in nature.
From the company:
"Leaves a streak-free shine. A natural and effective solution for safely cleaning glass & mirrors, chrome, stainless steel, and more...leaving nothing behind but a shine and a fresh scent.
Uses plant-based, biodegradable cleaners. Contains no ammonia, bleach, phosphorous, or dyes. This product was not tested on animals. Safe for plumbing and septic systems. Bottle made of 50% post-consumer plastic - please recycle."
Our bottle of Windex Nature's Source Natural Glass & Surface Cleaner came in a clear 26 ounce spray bottle and was sold along side the other glass cleaners on the market. It stood out (to me) to look different from the other Windex products in that it was not colored! The spray bottle is easy to use and has a trigger spray typical of most other glass cleaners. The directions state to point at the glass material and then wipe away. This is pretty common for cleaners of this type, and so far Windex wasn't really surprising me in any way.
Ingredients: Purified Water, Corn Based Ethanol, Plant Based Cleaning Agent, May Contain: Synthetic Fragrance, Stabilizer, Preservative
Well, those are pretty much the similar ingredients for any other "natural" based glass cleaner I have tried ... so my guess was that this particular product, Windex Nature's Source Natural Glass & Surface Cleaner, would perform the same. It did.
There was no odor noticed and this spray glass cleaner cleaned all of my glass surfaces well. It did not leave any streaks and it doesn't not make that "squeaky" sound when rubbing off. I've found that pretty much all natural glass cleaners work about the same, which to me is one small step below a regular glass cleaner (that bring, high shine is always missing to me) but clearly this type of product is supposed to be better for the environment.
Windex pulled out no stops trying to find a comparable natural cleaner on the market. They made sure they used all of the "buzz" words (recycle, plant based, not tested) in hopes of getting the consumer to buy. We purchased ours because we needed a glass cleaner at the time, we had a coupon to try the product and my husband prefers to buy natural products whenever he can. I don't think it's a product I "have" to have, and I think it performed averagely. I feel I would buy another natural glass cleaner if I needed cleaner again and found one at a cheaper price or better value.
Windex Nature's Source Natural Glass & Surface Cleaner ... good, but just average.
