Need a small oscillating fan for your office or cubical? The Windmere KD-12 Oscillating Fan is a worthy addition to anyones desk.
For those of us in the cubical dwelling world, a small desk fan can be a welcome distraction and comfort. Office buildings today seem to generally be hermetically sealed with no airflow. A small fan placed strategically in the cube or in your office, can give you a significant amount of airflow, should it be strong enough.
The Details
At about 6 inches wide at its widest point and about a foot in height, the KD-12 is small enough to fit on any open corner of a desk or shelf.
The oscillation runs about 180 degrees on the KD-12, giving a wide swatch of any space some air movement. Should you not want to have the fan oscillating back and forth, a small plug on the top can be pulled and the fan will remain in whatever position it was in when you pulled up the plug.
The KD-12 is powerful enough with two different speeds, high and low. High speed produces a strong breeze, enough to blow papers off the desk and move around loose fabric or other material. Low on the other hand is a more gentle breeze that generally will not knock papers off the desk and gives off enough of a breeze to keep the air moving around.
Both settings are quiet and the KD-12 does not generate a lot of noise, which is a welcome feature in an office environment. You dont want your annoying coworker in the next cubical over yelling about how loud your fan is. On the low setting, the fan is almost a background noise barely noticeable. On the high setting, the noise is somewhat louder, but not loud enough to travel much past the confines of a small office or a cube.
The fan runs on standard a/c power and comes with a cord that is about 6 feet long. This may be a bit of a problem for some office denizens who only have one plug, but nothing that a power strip or extension cord cant handle.
Cleaning the KD-12 is easy the entire unit can be wiped off with a damp rag, or should you feel like really cleaning it, including the blades, the protective cage around the blade can be easily opened with a small screwdriver and the blades individually wiped down.
Unit life is also quite good. Ive had my KD-12 running almost daily for 2 years now and since it was here before I arrived, I assume that it was used regularly before that. However, since Ive taken over in this cube, Ive never had a single problem with the KD-12, even when Ive accidentally left it on overnight or not cleaned it for a significantly long period of time. I do suppose though if its not cleaned regularly, the motor could eventually get clogged up with dust and lint and other nasties that float around and collect on the fan.
My Experiences
With The Annoying Coworker on my left, and an insanely crazy person on my right, Im smack dab in the middle of a Dilbert cartoon in my office. Annoying Coworker drinks at least a 6-pack of Diet Pepsi a day and is therefore very gassy. She lets them rip all day. Ive got my KD-12 setup such that no matter how the fan is oscillating, the air flow is such that it is blowing to my left so that any noxious odors are blown back into Annoying Coworkers cube (we only have 4 foot high cube walls here).
An added benefit of the fan is when it comes to insanely crazy girl on the other side of me. When Im sitting at my desk, I usually have to listen to her talk to herself, but with the KD-12 on the higher setting, it produces enough noise to drown her out and I can sit there with a breeze on my face.
Never mind the fact that the air in my office is almost toxic and doesnt move at all without outside interference. While its not clearing up the air, at least the KD-12 gives me a breeze to get me through the day. I cherish it one of the many tools I use to make it through an average workday.
So
If you are in a cubical, small office or other space where you want a breeze and some air movement, the Windmere KD-12 oscillating fan is a great choice that will provide quiet operation and years of repair free use.
And who knows, it just might make the average office circus that much easier to take.
