| Ladysmom's Full Review: Wolfgang Puck 4 qt. Saucepan w/Universal Steamer |
Last year my husband coaxed me into buying the Wolfgang Puck set of pans that were on the Home Shopping Network. He absolutely hated my old aluminum set but wouldn’t do anything with it until his mother passed away. She had given me those pots and pans and they were quite costly especially the larger ones. She felt I needed them because I had a large family to feed and the smaller pans just wouldn’t hold enough.
Now 10 years after her passing he had had enough of those pans. He had been reading and listening to various so called experts about the aluminum and decided we needed stainless steel no matter what.
That is when he purchased the Wolfgang Puck Set. I have enjoyed it and it came with a steamer pan but I really needed another one because of all the fresh vegetables now coming in I really like them steamed and not boiled half to death.
We contacted the Home Shopping Network and they did have another Woolfgang Puck 4 qt. Saucepan With Universal Steamer to go with the set so I ordered it and in 5 days it was delivered to the door.
This is a four-quart saucepan that is made from 1810 stainless steel, which I understand to be the best there is.
With the saucepan comes a universal steamer basket that fits into the pan and a tempered glass lid that goes on top.
The handle on the pan is riveted onto the saucepan just like the one is on the steamer basket. They do stay pretty cool but I prefer to use a potholder because at times I have left them on high and the handles got a little warm.
The inside and outside are polished steel with a three-ply bottom. That makes for better heat conduction so you don’t have to cook on the highest heat you have. I have found that there are no cool spots on this pan. It seems to evenly heat all over.
It does seem to take a little longer for the Woolfgang Puck 4 qt. Saucepan With Universal Steamer to get hot but that is because of the very thick bottom that it has. All their pots and pans are that way.
Don’t expect to find a lightweight pan in any of their stuff. All of them are heavy and heavy duty. They are built to last for a lifetime. Maybe even you kids lifetime.
With the Woolfgang Puck 4 qt. Saucepan With Universal Steamer I place water in the bottom of the pan and place it on the stove to start boiling with the glass lid on it. I prepare my vegetables. When the water has reached a boil I place the steamer basket into the pan and turn the heat down just to a simmer so that I keep the steam going and cover for the amount of time I want the vegetables to cook.
They come out so nice and fresh looking. You can add lemon to the water along with other herbs to give them a different flavor.
When the vegetables are finished cooking you can lift the steamer basket out without having to worry about having water splash everywhere. I have even used this for cooking a small amount of spaghetti. I just fill the saucepan more water so that the spaghetti is covered where as you don’t want the vegetables covered.
When the spaghetti is done you have a nice firm handle on the steamer basket to lift it out of the water and strain. No more of that pouring hot water all over the place or scalding yourself from the steam.
I not only use the pan for the steamer I also use it for a stockpot and for cooking other things. With two of them the possibilities are endless for cooking. It’s a great size for making soups, gumbos, and etoufee’s. If there are only two of you in the family then there is plenty leftover for the next days lunch or for freezing for those nights that you just plain don’t feel like cooking.
Now for the clean up. Since this is not a non-stick pan I really had my doubts as to how easy it would be to clean, especially since I am the queen of burn and serve. I know you wouldn’t think that by looking at my Saintly face in my picture but we all have some flaws. Some of us more that others, namely me.
Cleaning the Woolfgang Puck 4 qt. Saucepan With Universal Steamer is extremely easy to do. When you burn something on just place the lid back on the pot while it’s still hot so that the steam works on it. After the pan has cooled down enough to wash it comes right out. No scrubbing until your arm feels like it’s going to come off.
These pans can also go into the dishwasher and still come out shiny and looking new, if you are one of the ones that don’t burn and serve.
The tempered glass lid just pops into the dishwasher also and comes out clean.
The two major things that I found wrong with the pans are that the lids don’t fit tight and when the pan comes to a full rolling boil the water tends to spray out and the handle on the lid becomes hot.
You can turn down the heat to keep the lid from bouncing around so that the juices don’t splatter everywhere.
The manufacturer of these pans say they are safe in ovens up to 4500 degrees. I don’t know about you, I don’t plan on cremating my dinner and my oven doesn’t go that high. So I guess if you have the desire to place them in a kiln for some reason they should last.
The manufacturer also offers a lifetime warranty on the pans and lids. I haven’t heard of anyone needing to ever use this.
Thanks for reading.
