| shocka's Full Review: Yoda Jedi Master |
Easily the best part in George Lucas' recent and appalling Attack of the Clones was one of the final scenes, in which our Jedi Master Yoda, the tiny green puppet who has never had a chance to prove his power with the force, opens a massive can of whoop-*ss on the evil (boring) Count Dooku, leaping around with his light saber, spinning and smashing like a little hurricane of death! If there was one character in this film that deserved action figure treatment, it was Yoda, and we've been blessed with this little bundle of joy, easily the best Yoda figure ever created.
The new Yoda is part of the Star Wars Episode 2 3 3/4" line, and standing barely 2" tall, he's in scale with other Star Wars action figures. The little guy has a fantastic sculpt, with a dead-on likeness to his film self - he even looks angry! His "attack" pose doubles as his "old, worn" pose as he walks on his cane, and it looks great. His Jedi-robes are molded in soft plastic and have a "blow in the wind" pose, and are nicely detailed and highlighted, like the rest of the figure. In comparison to previous Yoda figures, he's a masterpiece (check out Michael's review in the BONUS! section for a look) - and his articulation has been vastly upgraded too, with excellent ball-jointed arms and cut-jointed neck and waist. The only thing more we could have asked for is wrist articulation, but Yoda does well without it.
Yoda supports a nice array of awesome accessories to support his bad-*ss look. Firstly, he has his cane, which he can hold and lean on in one hand while he walks, as above. Although simple, this is a nice accessory and Yoda wouldn't be Yoda without it. Secondly, Yoda has his sweet light saber, which is one of my favorite accessories ever - it's dead-on to the film, with a green laser shooting from the metallic handle, and holding it in his hand Yoda looks plain mean! If you're child-like, playful and insane like me, you'll have heaps of fun getting Yoda to battle your other toys, especially those with huge swords. Rock on, little green guy! Yoda also comes with a display base, a large orange-metallic thing that he can stand on, which features a nifty levitation action, in which turning the base causes him to rise thanks to a clear plastic rod which "floats" him up. It's nifty but none too impressive. Finally, Yoda comes with a force energy bolt, which fits onto his hand to use the force against enemies, and also float a piece of space junk, which breaks off the base.
Despite hating the 3 3/4 scale of the Star Wars figures, I'm willing to make an exception for Yoda, because the fella is just too damned kewl! The detail is brilliant, and the accessories exceptional, making his price worthwhile. One thing to note is that because Yoda is very popular and a shortpack, it's hard to find him, aside from in collector stores where his price is always jacked up. If this is the only way to get him, I think the price is worth it, because this is a great figure that I keep next to my computer with my other favorites. The only thing that keeps him from getting 5 stars is his scale, but ignoring that, he is a 5 star toy that all collectors and Star Wars fans should own.
