empireofthedog's Full Review: A Tribute to the Pixies
Death to the Pixies!
I love the Pixies, have loved them since I first heard them on college radio in about 1989. I drove straight to the record store and bought "Doolittle", and thus began my love affair with all things Pixie. I've seen the newer incarnations of the Pixies, Frank Black and the Catholics, The Martinis, Kelley Deal 6000 and more. While any of them would have been considered good had I walked in off the street expecting any random band, expecting part of The Pixies set me up for a fall. You would think I had learned my lesson. But, these are Pixies songs, the work has already been done, the songs are written put to music, performed. All anyone has to do is do it and it will sound great, right? Wrong. Nobody does The Pixies better than The Pixies. While all of the cover songs were good-ish, none came anywhere near being as good as the original-even in a different-but-not-better way. NONE. I hadn't realized until listening to this CD fully, that The Pixies' genius was in fact so great, that I don't expect anyone will ever do a Pixies song in any way any better than The Pixies could themselves.
Witness "Wave of Mutilation" surf edit, where The Pixies have remixed "Wave of Mutilation" to a slow beat. It's fabulous. Only they could make it as good as they made the original.
Weezer do a GREAT job on "Velouria", which barely salvaged the purchase for me. I mildly enjoyed the Samiam cover of "Here Comes Your Man", but mostly because I know them, so I have a point of reference for enjoyment of it. Nada Surf, the only other high profile band included, covers "Where is My Mind", but it was forgettable. Some other bands covering songs on the CD are Superdrag, Eve 6, Reel Big Fish , Weston, and The Sense Field.
I may seem over zealous, but there are in fact a lot of cover albums I've enjoyed, The Carpenters, Joy Division and Black Sabbath to name a few. This Pixies tribute just didn't work for me.
