"let's wander the graphite meadows cold'

Pros: Conventionally good singing with unconventional intensity; poetic (if odd) lyrics; imaginative instrumentation; effective album structure.

i found several radiohead references

Placed there on purpose, as part of my sinister mind-control campaign. Except that my mind-control is only in the interest of making you fitter, happier, and less productive.

the tribal-like drumbeats and the frantic guitar riffage towards the end do lend something of an infectious edge to it, i think.

Indeed!

since "kid a" isn't your favourite, then what is?

Give yourself perception points: i'd vote for Hail to the Thief, beating out previous champion Amnesiac. Naturally, i do agree that the Bends and OK Computer are excellent as well: Yorke and company reign from a great height.

when you review an artist i hardly know - i tell a lie, i haven't the foggiest about this one - i grasp at straws to find something i can relate to. and in this review, i found several radiohead references. as a rabid fan, there's nothing i can do but talk about them, rather than your fine review.

"there there" - it is catchy in a weird sorta way, do you not think? i mean, i wouldn't say it was catchy in a "pop" way. but the tribal-like drumbeats and the frantic guitar riffage towards the end do lend something of an infectious edge to it, i think.

and since "kid a" isn't your favourite - one of my friends would kill you if he heard you say that, he's already done me - then what is? i'd make a bet for either "amnesiac" or "hail to the thief". "amnesiac"'s my primary guess, though.

Hmm. No CDNow samples -- for what it's worth, they link Jeff Buckley, Shudder to Think, Sigur Ros, and Radiohead as "similar artists". As for female singers... we agree that Patti Smith was unique, and i like her, but she and Rebecca are not kindred. Bjork, then:

If you dislike Bjork for her singing, I don't think you'll have a problem with Rebecca. Even though Bjork's a good lyricist, she tends to sing like the words are an excuse for her vocal chops and swoops. Rebecca sings like she has to or you'll never know what the words sound like. VERY different attitudes.

Musically, Bjork's last couple of albums _are_ in the same ballpark as Home Wreckordings, though ballparks are fairly large buildings.

intendedly helpful,

An odd little thing I like about Epinions: when I write about a grandly melodic pop album about to get a push (though maybe a half-hearted one) from Sony, I get very nice comments telling me, abstractly, that it was a well-written piece. When i write about a singer who makes an album most random people would hate, i get very nice comments saying "Hey! I should buy this maybe!". We're weird people, we Epinionators.

good thing you put those ***'s afterwards, I needed a break. :)

No accident -- I thought a break was appropriate. I've never written one of those Epinions Member Center advice pieces about Developing an Epinions Personality (i dunno, i just sorta retrofitted my real-life one) or How to Rate (i usually click the little buttons with ratings on them), but i bet i'd do a real solid piece on How to Use Rows of Asterisks.

"There There" and "Cartoon Lust" both have very good beats, and to be clear, Hail to the Thief _is_ the current frontrunner for my Best Album of 2003 pick. They're just weird songs, is all.

Oh, and yeah, i had you and Nate in mind as the two music reviewers most likely to enjoy Home Wreckordings. Cheers!

She does indeed (Reply to this comment)

sound very odd, but then again, Patti Smith redefines odd to a certain degree, and I adore her.

Then again, I think Bjork came from a planet they should shut down.

So what am I to think? Perhaps I'll try and check her out if I can find where little "snippets" of her music exist. CDNow, perhaps? I'll look.

And until then, thanks for the review!

that was one hell of a tangent you went on there, going from "cartoon lust" to radiohead to guns 'n roses and scott weiland in the matter of about 7 seconds. good thing you put those ***'s afterwards, I needed a break. :)

and hey, 'there there' might not be catchy, but at least it's got a good beat.

anyway, I'm tempted to buy this just so I can take you up on shouting "you've got to be kidding, moron!" but i have a feeling I might actually kinda like it in a weird sorta way. so thanks for pointing it out....i'm hitting the local shop sometime this week, and i have a feeling one of your recommendations will be coming home with me.

right. enough rambling. fab review.
