grandgram's Full Review: David Zinczenko and Ted Spiker - Abs Diet Eat Righ...
That is the introduction in my new diet book called The Abs Diet Eat right every time guide by David Zinczenko editor-in-chief of Mens Health magazine. The title intrigued me plus a promo that said, The Abs Diet Way to a Flat Belly now how could you resist that. This is something men and women are always looking for a slim slender body and ways to keep it that way. I found this book a delightful read with the many quips the author throws in to keep you interested.
The book has eleven chapters and I am not going to list them all but here are a few titles, Never go hungry again, Shop til you drop (pounds), Lean in the middle, Start your night right, and Indulge and enjoy. These titles keep you interested and in the introduction he says the yo-yo days of dieting are over as the Abs Diet is a new way of eating. He begins with the ABS DIET POWER 12 dozen delicious foods and gives us a guide as follows:
Almonds and other nuts
Beans and legumes
Spinach and other green vegetables
Dairy (fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese)
Instant oatmeal (unsweetened, unflavored)
Eggs
Turkey and other lean meats
Peanut butter
Olive oil
Whole-grain breads and cereals
Extra-protein (whey) powder
Rasberries and other berries
I thought this Abs Diet Power list was unique and to my surprise I was doing all this already. I still found the book very interesting and many new recipes. The high fiber and high protein foods will fill you up and keep you that way for hours. The author list many things to stay away from as saturated fats, sugar (especially corn syrup) and alcohol.
Under a chapter called your weight is not your fault he describes how society and the foods we ate have contributed to our body shape. He states the worse enemy is High-Fructose Corn Syrup as most of the foods prepared today include this item as it is cheap and Americans consume 63 pounds of it each year. You will find this in most soft drinks, candy, pancake syrup, commercial yogurts, sweetened cereals, ketchup and sauces. He recommends checking the labels and if corn syrup is listed close to the top of ingredients you know you are getting extra calories that add to your body fat. The next is trans-fats and are in solid hydrogenated oils or trans-fatty acids. Food marketers love this because they are cheap and stay around forever without going bad. Here again check the labels and buy something else or make your own as the author includes many recipes.
Other areas the author suggests to check out when shopping for groceries is saturated fats these are what he calls Belly Busters. These will raise your cholesterol and could increase heart disease and some cancers. The last item to check labels on is refined carbohydrates where the Adkins diet as the author says that even a simple stalk of wheat is evil. He state it is somewhere in the middle because grains are what provide energy to feed the brain and muscles and fiber is what your body needs to stay healthy. The refined products as sugar, flour and most baked goods refine all the good nutrients out of the product. Read those labels.
The author goes into the list of your friends in the food chain and protein is the muscle builder saying that protein has more super power than the Hall of Justice. Just one of the many asides the author throws into his commentary. A high protein diet helps you lose the fat around the belly. Following the protein the author list fats and he states that ten years ago if he said that eat more fats he would have been dragged from his office and run out of town on a rail. Now Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are great and deliver vitamins and as the saying goes, Grease is the word- as long as its the right kind of grease. Again check those labels.
The final suggestion is using fiber as an appetite suppressor, whole grains, breads, cereal, oatmeal and berries. The author goes into the soluble and insoluble fibers and describes them, I thought his remark about insoluble fiber was funny as it goes through your system like Drano and clean up residue and goes out the back. The last item the author lists in this diet is calcium and suggests eating three servings a day of dairy products such as low-fat milk and yogurt.
In the chapter Lets Get Started we come to the suggested recipes following the 12 points listed in the authors Abs Diet Power. He covers all twelve areas with great sounding easy to make recipes. There are 54 pages of recipes and I will include just one that I have tried.
The Almond Hammer (Powerfoods 5)
½ cup 1% milk (I use dry milk with added low-fat creamer)
½ cup low-fat yogurt (I make my own with dry milk)
¼ cup sliced almonds
2 teaspoons chocolate whey protein powder (I use cocoa with my vanilla whey powder)
1 teaspoon honey (I will use Splenda)
1 teaspoon ground flaxseed (I ground mine in my coffee mill-works great)
6 ice cubes
Place all in a blender and whip up a powerful smoothie. It is delicious and easy.
Other suggestion in this book The Abs Diet Eat right every time guide are how to shop at your grocery store, how to order foods when you eat out and how to handle holidays. He also suggests that cheating once in awhile will not hurt you if you feel you need to splurge. This is a small book in size so it would be easy to carry with you. The book has 200 pages and the author includes successful stories throughout the book some are interesting but there seems to be too many of them so I skipped some.
The final chapter is on exercise and the author states we all are busy but not too busy to exercise. He lists the amount of time we watch television as 28 hours a week so you can cut down on that time and exercise. He lists ways to work on the Abs and what type works best with a list of several exercises and amount of time spend on each one. He even includes a workout worksheet with a point system to total up for the week. I played golf five day last week that was my exercise. I paid of $7.16 for this paperback book on Barnes and Nobel web site and was money well spent. STAY HEALTHY, EAT RIGHT AND EXERCISE TO MAKE FOR A SLIMMER YOU!
