I purchased the car from my mother in 1998 with 89,000 miles of near abuse for the duration of her ownership. After cleaning and fixing the minor, detail-oriented blemishes and engine repairs the car is as good as new to this day at 131,000 miles.
The 190E has proven to be exceptional in every department. Keeping up with scheduled preventative maintenance has kept the engine smooth and quiet as well as maintaining about 21 mph economy in the city and 24 on the highway. Of the interior comforts, the only nagging problem has been a chronic failure in the front passenger power window switch, which I replaced twice on my own for about $30.00. The seats have remained in great condition as well as the rest of the interior. I could only ask for a decent cupholder and leg room for my friends in the back seat!
This little buggy triumphs in the forest and mountains during my off-road outdoor excursions. Carrying on its top a Yakima Bike Rack with my Mountain bike and fly-fishing gear it neatly fits in with the Subaru Outbacks and Volvo Cross-Countries, with a bit more style in its age. It is structurally the soundest car I have owned with no alignment problems or funny noises to speak of. And yes, this Benz looks good with a little dirt.
The price of fixing the car has been minimal, mainly because nothing ever needs to be fixed!! With the exception of the water pump, replaced once at 125,000 miles, its been a flawless automobile. The absurd cost of this one part is greatly outweighed by the reliability of the "baby benz", and I look forward to trucking off to my next Triathlon in style.
