Introduction
The key word in describing the 1994 Accord is "balanced." It is large enough to be comfortable for 4 passengers and not unbearable for 5, yet small enough to be easy to maneuver and park. It is powerful, with very authoritative acceleration and an accurate automatic shifting when you step on the gas. But it is gas-efficient for a car this old, getting around 22 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway.
Comfort
The Accord's seats are very comfortable. At times, I have had to sit in the car for 10-20 minutes waiting for someone or something. I sat back and listened to music, and did not feel at all uncomfortable. Comfort was also important when I had a job delivering pizza for a couple of weeks; then, too, I had no problem spending much of my day sitting in the car.
My only complaint is that some bells and whistles are lacking. There is no cup holder, so if I have a beverage, it rests precariously between my knees while I drive. Nor is there any obvious place on the dash to put one. The windows are manual, so if you are driving alone, you can only open the driver's side one. More than once, I have wished I could roll down the front right window to ask for directions from a passerby, but could not do so without dangerously reaching over.
The heating is powerful and easy to control, with dials for fan power and heat level. This is nice since I like the car warm, but not too warm, when driving in the winter. The A/C is a bit disappointing, though. On a hot summer day (85 or above), I can turn it up full blast and it never seems to get cool enough. Sometimes I just end up opening the windows, or at least the one window I can reach.
Performance
The Accord is not a sports or luxury car, but when you step on the gas, it will go. I'm not an aggressive driver, but the strong acceleration has been a safety feature for me when merging onto the highway or making a right turn on red. The steering is also excellent, responsive but not so much that one is likely to oversteer. Brakes require only a light touch. I have taken my Honda up to 100 [Mom, if you're reading this, I'm only kidding :-)] and while it did shake a bit, it was able to sustain that speed. 85 is no problem.
The noise factor is strange. The Accord doesn't run especially loudly, but when accelerating beyond 50 or so, it tends to make a screeching sound. It seems to take more effort than it should to go from 65 up to 75. The acceleration is as fast as at lower speeds, but I could do without the noise.
Maintenance
I take my Accord in for an oil change every 3,000 miles. Other than that, not too many problems for a 9-year-old car. Since receiving it 2 years ago, I have needed a new muffler, the recommended 60,000 mile tune-up (which I won't have to do again until 120,000), a filter or two, a new headlight, and maybe some brake work. But overall, the car has been highly reliable. It has never broken down or had serious trouble on the road, and I don't expect it to ever do so, as long as I keep taking it in for scheduled work.
My plans
I'm a student about to enter the field of social work. It's not a high-paying job as far as the professions go; one saying I heard was that "You know you're a social worker if your car is not listed in the Blue Book." So I expect to be driving my Honda for a while. I'd like to someday get a hybrid or fuel cell vehicle to reduce the polluting I'm creating, but for the next 5 years at least, I'll be relying on my 1994 Accord.
Note: The price I listed is 0 because I received the Accord as a graduation present.
