Lots of problems with my 1996 Jetta GL, starting within weeks. Alarm system failed, had to be repaired 3 times, including new key locks. Door bumper strips keep falling off. Engine check light comes on and costs a fortune to fix. Key lock came off on my key and triggered the alarm system. The car had to be towed to the dealership and a new key lock put in. The life expectancy of the key lock is about 2 years. Front windshield leaked and it took 4 tries to fix. Goodyear tires wore out after 23,000 miles. VW knows they are crappy tires, but won't stand behind their decision to put them on the car at the factory.
VW did extend my warranty from 2 years to 3 years after I complained. I thought nothing else could go wrong with the car, but I was very wrong.
I wish I had sold the car before the warranty expired. Everything on that car that goes wrong has to be fixed several times. I don't think it's the service on the car, I think the care is poorly designed and poorly built.
It is a pleasure to drive, but exasperating to own.
