I bought my 2000 Mustang GT new in March 2000. As of this writing, I have over 33,000 miles on it and the only problem to date was a faulty Idle Air Control valve, fixed under warranty.
I guess I should mention that I am slightly biased when it comes to Mustangs. You see, I have been in love with them since before I could drive. This is the fifth Mustang I have owned in the last fifteen years, but I can say without a doubt it is the best one yet.
It has 260 HP which is more muscle than most people will ever need. Its exterior styling is slick and muscular, much more masculine-looking than the swoopy exterior of the 94-98 models (of which I owned one). The Mach 460 sound system is pretty good for most people, but I'm a bit of an audiophile so mine was replaced with an aftermarket system.
If you're looking for a daily driver that you can modify, this is it. There is an entire aftermarket industry devoted to the Mustang. The older 5.0 liter Mustangs get most of the attention of the aftermarket companies, but there are quite a few options for the later 4.6 liters. I installed a set of aftermarket springs on mine less than a week after bringing it home and, to me, the stance now looks perfect. If you lower your Mustang, you'll need to install a set of caster/camber plates so that it can be properly aligned afterwards. Even with the aftermarket springs, the ride is comfortable; firm but not harsh. I've done a few other mods since then as funds allowed and I've had a blast every step of the way. To me that's all part of the fun of owning a Mustang. My recipe for Mustang fun, buy a 99 or later GT (or a Cobra if you've got the money), pick up one of the magazines devoted to late model Mustangs (5.0 & Super Fords or Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords), read the tech articles to learn what works and what doesn't, order parts from the advertisers in the mag, install and enjoy!
