2001 Honda Civic Helps Save Money During High Gas Prices Season

by charles: Written: Apr 23 '06 - Updated Apr 23 '06

Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: great gas mileage; reliable
Cons: Frozen ignition lock, complete shut down, cracked exhaust manifold, rekeying ignition key
The Bottom Line: No matter what, Honda Civic is a good car to own. Nobody can go wrong with a good package.

That is what I had in mind when I encouraged my wife to purchase a 2001Honda Civic 4 DR LX. I wanted to get ready for the months of spiked gas prices. I wanted to have money in my pocket. I wanted to have a good economic vehicle to run the errands. Five years later, I still feel that I made a good investment with the 2001 Honda Civic. Knowing that my wife would use it a lot to take the kids to their school and to shop, I made sure to encourage to get the Honda Care package. We wanted to know that if something happens to the 4-door Civic, it will still be on warranty. For the past four years, we never had any problems with the car. We were counting our blessings. In the meantime, we bought other vehicles such as a Nissan Quest, but the Honda Civic outlasted it. Then, it was time to buy a much better vehicle. We still decided to keep the Honda Civic because I started to travel a lot. I needed a very economic car to put all the miles on. So I got the Honda as a hand-me down. With 50,000 miles, it was the perfect the little car that I needed for my work.

All throughout its years of great performance, the car received optimum care. I made sure to service it on a regular basis. When the car hit the magic 71,000 miles, I started seeing the change. The get and go car started being sluggish. It was as if something was wrong with the Honda. Indeed, there were many things that got used over the years. The ignition started missing. On a bad day, it would not start immediately. But there again, I was never stranded. Then, one evening, nothing worked. The faithful Honda Civic became frozen. Well, its ignition was frozen. Everything automatically froze. After trying to get it started to go home for what seemed to be an eternity (When you are hungry and know that you are not going to eat dinner with the family), I gave up. I left the Honda at work. I made an appointment with a towing company to tow it to a mechanic in a nearby city. As my wife and I were going to the shop, we remembered that we had Honda Care. She made a few phone calls to the local Honda dealership. By then, the mechanic had already decided to solve the problems by giving us a different key. So we would have two sets of keys on the car. He had already given instructions to one of his workers to start working on the Honda. My wife and I were waiting for a response from the Honda dealership employee. After about 1 hour, we found out that the car was still under warranty and that Honda Care was ready to honor its insurance. With 71368 miles on a 75,000 coverage, we were lucky to have the problems fixed. The Honda dealer got a towing company to get the car from the mechanic's shop to the dealership premises. We were promised that the Honda would be ready the next day.

The ignition key had to be rekeyed. The exhaust manifold was cracked and had to be replaced. The gasket manifold/converter had to be replaced. We only had to pay for the rekeying. We paid $50.00 for it. Everything else was under warranty. Here is a list of the parts that were put on the car: Lock assy., steering, gasket, ex. manifold, converter, manifold nut (10 mm), gasket, ex. pipe.

After 1 month, we realized that the car was drastically different. We decided it was time for it to know a new owner. We decided to trade it in. It was time to get a new vehicle. But we will miss the good mileage the 2001 Honda used to give to us. At a time like this, who does not want to drive an energy-efficient vehicle?
